I know we don't have avatars to save bandwidth, but what if there were some prefabricated avatars made that we can choose from that would indicate our nation's tech level? They don't have to be very complex, and could probably be .gif's less than 6 kb in size.

It's a little picture (of your choosing) that would go beneath your nation name and post title.

It's been said before that we're not going to get avatars.

And given that many people don't have a "tech" level, what would be the point of them having access to such avatars?

An avatar is a small picture next to someone's username on some forums.

Frankly, I think it would be a stupid idea because:
1) Most of the nations don't fit into a specific tech level
2) A lot of the ones who do will think it a waste of time when they can just add a bit of text in their signature
3) You'd have to allow custom avatars as well, which would cause total chaos
4) Uber-tech nations would be able to seek out small stone-age nations by their avatars.

So come off the idea.

1) the avatars could be very basic so that nations that are, say, WWII tech could just call themselves modern, and anyone with spaceships that can fight are future.

2)If anyone thinks it a waste of time then they don't have to get one.

4) Its called ignoring. You could ignore a nation that does that.

What about those of us that primarily NationStates in a non-RP fashion?

If you're referring to Hack, Bender, he's always that way. The mods have tried to give him some anti-depressants, but they just don't take. :D :p

If you're referring to everyone else, you need to expect some amount of disapproval by others. An idea is usually really great in the eyes of the public, or really bad. It seems yours fell into the latter.

Hersfold, you seem to be under the impression that The Most Glorious Hack is a NationStates Admin or a Jolt admin. Hack is either a Game Mod or a Senior Game Mod, one of several in either case. [violet] and SalusaSecondus are the only current NS admins (subject to extremely rare override by Max, of course).

Salusa has already stated that this won't be happening, so I fail to see the benefit of appealing to a lower authority. (no offense, TMGH)

My comment wasn't harsh, it was just to the point. Why should I take 10 sentences to say something that can be clearly expressed in four words?

I had an idea similar to this but , different- i was thinking about having nations flags as there avatars.... just wanted to throw that out there. you may begin the bashing now!!! :)

My bad. I have a tendency to see them both as Admins for some reason. Sorry. And Hack, hope you don't mind the accidental compliment (?).

Not that avatars are going to be implemented, but I think it would be more worthwhile to have avatars that were useful for everyone... such as maybe an avatar that said what region you came from. That would be way more useful, since everyone comes from a region, whereas not everyone is concerened with tech levels.

Nah. Take Nanakaland for example. He RPs Modern Tech and Future Tech and has some elements of Fantasy and does occassional Historical RPs and pretty much RPs with any tech? What'd his avatar be? The avatar system would work if people were forced to chose a tech, but that'd limit RPing potential...
