My husband and I have the computer in our home and the computer in his shop out back networked. I was on here posting in a thread when he logged in on the computer in his shop and joined the same thread. Next thing I knew, all of my posts were coming in in his name. What's up with this? What do we need to do?

Jibber, there's pretty much nothing you can do easily to solve that one, im sorry :(... im sure a solution is possible, but it involves work.

Are you using a router?

I assume you use different user accounts on the machines ?
If so - does this also happen if you both use different browsers (one internet explorer, one firefox e.g.) ?

The only solution I know of would be using different phone lines for each computer.

We have cable internet and I'm not sure what all the guy did to hook it up. All I know is, I was posting away, my husband posted in the same thread, and the next thing I knew my post was coming in as Iwannabeacowboy. We both use IE as our internet provider doesn't geehaw with other browsers. Oh, well, I don't get a day off very often. I guess we can live with it and I'll ask our IP what happened. Thanks!

It sounds to me like you're using a router of some sort, so this network is getting your IP confused. He would have to log out of his account, and you would have to log back into yours before the problem is solved. It's kind of like having a puppet. You can't be on with both nations simultaneously.

Spot on I believe the forums do an ip address based rule once you log on anything coming from your ip is considered you …
Since you have the same external ip you are considered the same person

I don't know what to tell you. Probably a server error or something of that nature. Reseting seems to cure all ailments on my computer.

Or...Your computer may be possesed.

In which case you'll need garlic, a platinum crusifix, 4 gallons of Holy Water processed through Poland Springs, a digital image of Bill Gates (AKA Satan) and a goat (preferably shaven).

Everything is OK now. I didn't have the stuff you recommended, but I used a can of Diet Coke, a shake of garlic salt, a digital image of Elmer Fudd, and I waved one of my dogs over the monitor. It must have worked. Oh...my husband logged off, so that probably helped some too.

You all are probably right about NS only recognizing the one IP address. We'll just have to coordinate ourselves better. Thanks again!

Even though the problem is fixed..

Solution:

You said you're running a cable connection, what might be the problem is this.. You are probally using a HUB (not a rounter) the hub just makes 1 connection in to many. The Router actually has the digital information that you're sending out. The Hub is probally sending the connection to the machine networked in the back. But... you only have 1 IP Address registered to the account (which will sometimes will not allow the primary computer to work).. You can see if you're using a Router or Hub (If using a Hub, purchase a router, install, restart the machine) (If using a router, call your company up, request secondary STATIC IP, and rock and roll from there)

You might have better luck getting an answer in "Technical".

Thanks Cog, but I'm still reeling from the answer Drussia gave me. I think we'll just deal with it the way it is and see if my son can fix it the next time he visits.

Thank you David, but your knowledge is way out of my league (see above). I'll let someone who knows something come in and do whatever it was you said.
