EDIT: HOME EDITION WORKS TOO! I just found this out.

Alright, there's something wrong with my explorer.exe file. Probably. At least it seems that way.

Anyway, my computer was recovering from a fit of viruses, and apparently one changed the code in the explorer.exe file. Glee. So that's where you all come in.

If you own Windows XP Professional Edition (I know it sucks, but that's besides the point), you can earn a virtual cookie by e-mailing your explorer.exe file attached to an e-mail to the following e-mail account:
wetsail@gmail.com
Put "Saving Resi!" in the title, so as to keep it from being stuffed as spam.

Oh, and viruses will be spat upon, and the sender damned to hell. So don't do that.

Forgot to mention, in addition to the cookie, the sender of the exe will also get a G-mail invite. Through some glitch I have 50 of the things...

Before anyone sends it, better check versions.

I'm using XP Pro, Service Pack 2 (XP SP2)

C:\windows\explorer.exe is version 6.0.2900.2180

Bob, I don't know how you plan to install this file. Windows might allow it in safe mode, but probably have trouble even there. It's the key file.

A better plan would be to use a Restore Point. Full instructions are in Windows Help or at www.microsoft.com.

(yes, I do do this for a living)

Restoring isn't an option for me, for several reasons. First among them is that I don't want to re-update my regestry, second being that I'm not sure I even have a viable restore point as I've had system restore turned off until about a month ago, just about when the viruses started.

I plan to install the file by taking the good explorer and editing the regestry to look to it for data instead of the real explorer, and restart the computer. I've done something like this before, but not exactly. Do you think it'd work?

Oh, and SP2 doesn't like my computer. I only have SP1 unfortunately. :(

Seeing as you're probably the most in-the-know person I can hope to get, is there a place on the web I can download just the explorer file?

Internet Explorer is c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe

explorer.exe is Window's native file manager, desktop manager, and all-around key component in the Windows GUI. While Firefox does a fine job, it can't exactly replace the entire OS.

I would agree that Micro$oft suffers from a lack of imagination when it comes to naming things, though.

Ugh. Not INTERNET EXPLORER. WINDOWS EXPLORER. There's a difference.

And even if it was Internet Explorer, how is that helping? That's just telling me to ignore my problem and do something else.

BWA HA HA HA HA HA .... Silly 'license fee avoider' person.

No place I'd trust. This is as good a place as any to ask. You need somebody who hasn't upgraded to SP2 yet. I am pretty sure that XP Home version would work just as well, honestly. XP Pro's added features lie elsewhere. And given the hacking you're going to have to do to install it, so what if it fails? You're no worse off.

One alternate idea - grab an ISO of a bootable Linux CD, and boot from that. You can use the Linux file manager tools to replace even core files while booted as Linux. I used Dyne-Bolic (http://www.dynebolic.org/) a year or so ago for that very purpose. They seem to still be there, and I've seen others.

Luck.

Ah, it's Windows Explorer.

Ah well. IE Still sucks, and viewing NS is better on Firefox. So I just solved a question you didn't ask!

Ewww... Linux? Yuck!
Actually, I just don't know how to use Linux yet. My regestry idea seems more in my sphere of knowledge anyway.

At the time I turned off System Restore, I thought it took up too much hard drive space for its own good. Yup, I'm feelin' smart right about now.

So Home works, y'say? How about Home SP2, 'cause if that's the case I can just get it off my laptop?

Eh, oops. Forgot to post my version of Windows Explorer.

6.0.2800.1106

That should do it.

Naw. You need an SP1 version from somewhere. I'm too tired to drag out the version info. Try Googling "XP SP1 manifest explorer.exe" without the quotes. You might get lucky.

Darn that Google.

Anyway, looks like I might be getting it from another source. I'll have to check the version and such first, but it looks promising to my cautiously optimistic mind.
