Total Population
This has nothing to do with anything...except dealing with my own curiosity.
If there any way to calculate the total population of NationStates?

I was thinking the same thing.
I don't know. I think an admin would have to do it, but it would probably take a lot of time.

hmm, i don't know, all you would need is to have some sort of program that accesses the site database and counts up all the numbers.... but it may have problems with 514 million and 5.14 billion or something like that, they are a lot alike...

Im taking an educated guess here, but the system should be database driven. With that the 'population' of each nation would be its own data record. It would take the programmer a little time to query the database but it shouldn't be a difficult task. Would be nice to have a page with that kind of information.

It's not database-driven.
Max has stated that if he were to write the game again, it would run on a database, but it doesn't.

well then wherever the data is stored the program has to access

I see, my mistake for being new.
As for the difficulty with the M and B differences. You would just add the numbers up seperatly and then bring them to the same value type (mutliply the B value by 1000 to make it an M value, THEN add them together). But since this isnt running on a database that makes things much more difficult and time consuming.

Actually, I have a good idea of it right now (all data are as of Jan 10th):
Total Population: 76,471,542 Million (76.471542 Trillion)
Average (Mean): 626 Million
Minimum: 5 (Tie amongst 2,591 nations)
1st Quartile: 82 Million
Median: 265 Million
3rd Quartile: 721 Million
Maximum: 5,332 (Praetor)

Wow - thanks Sal...
So get this...if NationStates were on a planet the size of Jupiter (as many players assume), and if Jupiter was entirely solid surface (no oceans) its population density would be about 1194 persons per square km.
Earth today has about 42 people per square km.
Clearly we need a larger planet on NS.

The bigger you make the planet, the more we get squashed into pancakes.

yes, except for the fact that most of us live on different planets, or in my case, my own planet no one else lives on.

Wow, over half of NSers have been playing for less then three months.

Nah, we're all hanging out on an asteroid the size of a pea. Big enough.
Interesting information...

 how is that possible, when i joined, there were still over 500,000 players, how could it only be 1,000,000 people now and have all those who joined not count?
even a few months ago(May) the number was at 750,000 players....

That's total number of nations that we've ever had, not how many are currently active.

Well, why don't we just godmod that there's regular gravity for some reason, and it's OMG2X bigger than J00p173r?

also, since i originally joined in December of '03, but then rejoined, do i count as one or two nations in the NS history?

Did you create another nation, or were you reincarnated?
If the former, yes, if the latter, no.

My system clock (GMT -5) says otherwise. You look older to me somehow.

your time says he was made in december
his says he was made in january
in the old system, the game had its own set timer that couldn't be changed, in this one it can so he was made in january(unless its other way around)
