Money-making idea for NS.

I was thinking that there might be a way for NS to make a little bit of money with minimal effort.
I know that this might be slightly unethical, but hey, is NS above selling indulgences?
What my suggestion is is that for anyone who has ever broken the rules or anything, if they'd gotten a warning for flamebaiting a year ago or something, and they want that expunged from their record they could donate $5(US) and poof, their record is clean.
And the scale could be gradual, $5 for flame baiting warning removal, $10 for UN multi mark removal (and another five for each nation the person multied with.) You know.
Just a crazy thought I had.

Wow; in an evil way that's quite a clever idea. I think that on the day this happens Satan will be skiing to work.

Believe it or not, NationStates is actually making money already, NationStates itself is an advertising feature for Max Barry's 'Jennifer Government' novel. There are many tales of users buying the book, due to NS.
As for making money in and for itself, rather for something else, I believe Max is against any form of idea.

That would make NationStates an extremely capitalist venture. :D

No. The idea of institutionalizing corruption is simply abhorrent.

Instead of being entirely insane, you could just put a small google ad on the main page, or at the bottom of each page, if they need money.

NationStates pays for itself by advertising Max's book, the forum pays for itself through the banner ads at the top.

Originally posted in Digital Dante (http://dante.ilt.columbia.edu/new/papers/trotc/)
In Canto XIX, Dante describes, "The entire Third Pouch of the Eighth Circle is devoted to simonists. Simony is the selling of Church offices or indulgences, a common Medieval form of Church corruption. In this Third Pouch, each simonist is held headfirst in a rock with only their feet protruding. Their feet are constantly burned by a neverending flame. One flame, however, burns stronger than the others. Upon inquiry, Dante learns that this is the flame of the Pope, the chief-simonist.
So in this version, each of the mods and admins are encased in rock, with the brightest flame reserved for Max himself? Seems like that would make it hard to reach the keyboards and click the "Delete Post" button. Apart from that, it sounds rather appealing.
Mods, you should go for this. You's go directly to the Eighth Circle, bypassing Minos the gatekeeper, who could otherwise chose to send you to your other accusatory location - the 5th Circle, home of the Wrathful and the Sullen, condemned to be submerged in the Styx for all eternity. Oh wait, have you already been judged by Minos? Looks to me like you're currently in the 4th Circle amidst the Hoarders and Wasters, condemned to an eternity of useless and counterproductive labor.
Maybe you could all consider jobs as minor demons working for Lucifer? Moderating this board is certainly good training for dealing with sinners of all sorts. One way or another, you're assured a choice location in Hell.

Ok, just thought I'd throw it out there.

Just a crazy thought I had.
So, does that mean that other players would have to pay to keep DoS or IP banned players (who would pay some fee to keep playing) from doing so? We'd have some price wars going on here!
/me laughs!

Well wouldn't that be more like the book? People bid for the right to play the game and restrict others access to the game.
Just think if a company bought the rights to play and spammed us daily with ads. We could go down in a wash of ads. :p
