Flag-10KB restriction!
How am I supposed to make a decent flag with only 10kb to work with???
I mean, it is not enough, my flag is really quite bare and is like 16KB! Please increase the allowance! The only way I can get it to below 10kb is using that awful mspaint to save it which decreases the image quality big time.

Imagine the strain on Jolt servers if the restriction is upped.
Over 100,000 active nations, about half of which use custom flags, and the names and of about 900,000 others waiting to be resurrected.
Or something like that.
Upping the flag limit would definately cause a problem.
Also, I have a plain flag (I do mine in Paint) and I use the GIMP to convert to JPG. Even on high quality settings my flags never seem to go over 5kb.
For simpler flags (e.g. those with 10 colours or less) the .gif format is a better bet.
More complicated flags will need to be saved as .jpg with high compression.
Be thankful the flag size is 10kb. It used to be 6kb.
Ok, I got mine down by saving it in paint shop pro rather than adobe photoshop.

I thought you could only use JPEG?

You can use gif if you rename the extension jpg. Photoshop by default saves jpg at 100% quality, making huge files. You can't use "Save as" in the menu to save small files. You need to use "Save for the web" (or similar, it's been a while).

I've never had a problem uploading gifs with the gif extension.

You could also use Photoshop's save for web feature, tweak the quality settings on the JPEG file, which usually works nicely. 40 (out of 100) does well enough for most of my images, including my flag which was made when the restriction was 6kb.

It says only .jpg but .gif also works.

Or, you could resize with IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com) which is 100kb and free. It lets you adjust jpg quality while saving and has easy resize tools. Been using it for about 3 years now, and have resized all my custom flags (save Man or Astroman's) with it.
Man or Astroman uses an animated gif, and IrfanView won't let you rework the individual frames. Had to use The Gimp for that.
