Millionth Nation Created!

Hot damn, we've broken the magic 1,000,000 barrier! That's a million nations in a little over two years. No wonder the world feels crowded.

Because the number of names reserved for former nations is getting kind of ridiculous (850,000 and counting), we'll soon begin releasing the names of nations that were purged for inactivity more than 18 months ago. That means you'll be able to create a fresh new nation with the same name as an old, deleted one (and the old one won't be able to be resurrected).

And no, before you ask, bribes will not get you first crack at a cool name. Don't look at me like that, I know you were thinking it.

http://www.nationstates.net/news/2004/12/07/index.html#million

So....any details on the nations that this will include and when they will be released?

(For the record, 18 months ago today is 7 June 2003. Meaning it's actually after I was created.)

Maxtopia probably will not be released for retaking. It probably has sentimetal value.

A few clarifications in order I think:

It is the nation names that are being made available. If you want a really old nation it will have a population of 5 million and be susceptible to all your customising as per usual.
Nations deleted by moderators will not be made available.
Maxtopia will not be available.
We don't know when this will be implemented - we're still discussing various things we may want to do that is relevant to this first.
Nations that were once moderators will not be made available.

What about country names (like Holland)?
How many names are to be released (=how many nations are dead for more then 18 months, 100.000, 150.000?)?

I'd add the names of anyone who ever passed a UN resolution to the "not available" list. That's the only in-game place I can think of where names are permanently attached to specific game items. It's a pretty short list anyway, counting only the ones prior to July 1, 2003 -

Inactive: Maxtopia, Genius, Otnemem, Nassland, Mercia, Monocerous, Armstrongonia, Aschen, Petkania, The imperial senators, Techno prisoners, X-tonia, Lovinia, Kibombwe

Still active: Fallopian Tube, Kundu, Santa Barbara, Austrivum, Athine

Well obviously, it was only a joke...

I would also add the names of anyone who contributed an issue to the not availible list, although issue contribution was not in the game back then.

The restrictions regarding both issues and passed resolutions make sense. Thanks for catching those.

You could also add to the not available list the names of those nations who were "famous" in the forums, and those who created threads that are now stickies. Also, you could add people who created threads that are in the archive.
Just suggesting.

Well, there's the odd case where a founder nation died a long time ago, but the region's still around (and showing no signs of dying in the near future).

Also, what's going to happen to these old nations in the database? All deleted at once, deleted as needed when names are requested, shifted to a table not used by the game? What about when one of these people shows up and asks for their nation to be revived?
Jjuulliiaann

I would suggest deleting as requested.

Will old names become available all at once and only when it is decided that it is time to do some more?

Or will this batch be all at once and then be each day there might be additional ones that reach their 18th month as of that day?

Any target date estimate for when this happens?

What about when one of these people shows up and asks for their nation to be revived?

I believe it says on the News page that nations whos names are re-taken won't be able to be resurrected.

Any target date estimate for when this happens?
There will be no announcement made when it happens, largely to prevent sudden rushes as everyone goes to try and snap up the obvious nation names.

Greetings to All and Sundry,

I think that this is a great idea! With the Nation States News announcing an estimated 850 000 names reserved for nations no longer with us and it must be a bit frustrated for the players out there who had no chance at some of these cool names, currently be hoarded by people who are obviously no longer interested in keeping them. Being new to the game and typing in about 20 names and variants before finding something that works might be a bit much for some. Of course, I’m as guilty as many of the other kids, having myself let a few nations with cool names lapse into the void of inactivity.

Such as with Earth Orbit Region. Lagrange 4 is still listed as the (dead) founder, and the region's about eighteen strong (14 better than when he was alive) and its offshoot's doing pretty well.

12-12-2004, 17:21
I really don't understand why people want to have a certain name. It is just a name

There were no founders around 18 months ago, and foundership was given about 17 months ago. Any nation that was given foundership after that period will not be revived, so you get a cool name, but no region attached to it. :p
I might be a few days off, because I play this game for just 16 months.

What? Are you saying there were no founders? I was here in July 2003, and that was almost 18 months ago, and I remember that there were founders, I think.

I founded Democratic Underground about ten minutes after I joined the game on 17 May 2003. Therefore, the anecdotal evidence proves that Founders were extant 18 months ago.

But don't forget you have to factor in the 28 day minimum age of a nation when it dies. Meaning a nation that ceased to exist 18 months ago had to have been founded a minimum of 19 months ago.

12 December 2004 minus 18 months equals 12 June 2003.
12 June 2003 minus 28 days equals 15 May 2003.

The announcement (http://www.nationstates.net/news/2003/04/29/index.html#regional_control) on the News Page that described the creation of Founders was posted on 29 April 2003.

I'd like to second this as well, for obvious reasons. We'd hate to see non-resurrected nations claiming to repeal a resolution they once wrote.

Despoto is probably the first name to be re-used, seeeing as it apperars on Max's screenshot and now had a population of ~40 million.
