Hi world. Since I am new at this, I want to ask some questions about how NS works and some terms in the fourm.
1. Why can't I use an avatar?
2. What does "bump" mean?
3. Who is Max Berry?
4. What is the little title under your names in the fourm, and can it be changed?

I might add questions sometimes. Thanks for posting, you people rock.

clarification on number 3:

Max Barry is the Author of Jennifer Government, of which this whole game is just one big advertisement for. You can visit his site at http://www.maxbarry.com and also I would suggest pick up a copy of Jennifer Government. Max Barry is also a beagle dog (see proof picture below), and [violet] is a supercomputer.

1. Why can't I use an avatar?
Even though normal Jolt users can pay to get avatars or get them after 10,000 posts, I do not believe NS users can get those privileges. None of the people with over 10k in posts have avatars, and I don't think you could pay Jolt to give you one even if you wanted to.

4. What is the little title under your names in the fourm, and can it be changed?
The little title changes in proportion to your post count. As you post more, your title changes. Mods can edit their own titles, but the prescribed titles are here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=7020479&postcount=98) .

Well, all I can say is welcome to NationStates. We are the largest forums on Jolt, with over (I think) 2 million posts. And we've only been here for a few months!

As for your questions, they're good ones, and you've got some good answers. Never be afraid to ask, and don't be scared off by n00b hating idiots.

A Note on the whole website-is-an-ad thing: Not only is Max Barry the games creator and an exceptional dog, he's an extremely talented marketing guru (read Syrup, you'll get it). Check out both his books (w00t for book plugs!).

Regarding the "n00b hating idiots thing," respect bigger nations, don't invade them without a really good in-character reason (no, "I wanna take over the world" is generally not considered a good reason), read the stickies in International Incidents, and you'll be fine. :)

Reasonable people on NS forums distinguish between "n00bs" and "newbs." A n00b is a nation that thinks it can push other nations many time its size around with "I take over the world and own you" posts, and n00bs usually 'godmod,' a practice discussed in the stickies and strongly frowned upon.

A newb, on the other hand is simply a nation new to NationStates, who is willing to learn play by rules and generally accepted protocols (read the stickies for detailed info), and there's nothing wrong with that.:)

No, you don't have to read all the stickies in one day, but reading them at some point is strongly suggested.

That said, I'm kinda a newb myself, so any really experienced nations out there, please feel free to add to/correct what I say.

Also, don't forget to read the FAQ to your left on the NS screen.
