Nation creation question

Having suddenly recalled just how cool they are (yes, they are dammit!) I decided to create a nation of Predators called - with staggering imagination - "The Predators." However, I was informed by the game that this is reserved for a nation; upon checking, to my dismay, I found that no such nation existed. Which brings me to my point: is there any way of bypassing this (short of selecting another name) and for that matter was there ever a nation called "The Predators" or is it just a bug?

It's not a bug. A name belongs to a nation for eternity, even if the nation expires. You can try clever variations if your heart is set on the name such as misspelling it or inserting dashes. Some examples (although they might also be taken) are given below:

A Predator
The_Predators
The-Predators
The Predatorss
Da Predators

This was done to allow reincarnations of inactive nations, and to prevent someone getting attacked because they have the same name as a rule-breaker. No name that has been used before, no matter howlong ago, may be used again. And obviously not one currently in use.

sounds like a good rule to me.
