How does the site work?

Is there a continuously running program/script/module in charge of increasing population, rewriting nation description, deciding UN category, and so on every x minutes?
Or..
Does everything happen when visitors to the site trigger the execution of whatever magical functions make things happen?

I'm guessing Jolt would never allow processes to run on their servers.

Updates are happening several times a day. Your nation's population is updated once a day. I think that your nation's statistics are also updated once a day. The game doesn't run on Jolt's server. Only this forum does.

Hosting and graphic design by:
Jolt Online Gaming, Europe's premier gaming ISP
Says Jolt's hosting.

But how do the updates happen?
Through user interaction?
Manually?
Or by a program running on the server?

They're set to go off twice a day, at fixed times. The nation and region pages are just .cgi files created in PERL that pull out data from the nation and region files and display it, as is the UN page.

So is cron responsible for executing the scripts then?

So is cron responsible for executing the scripts then?

Yes, it's most likely to be a CRON job.
