IP Banning

I was wondering if there are any other ways to ban a member other than through their IP? I've IP banned a nation from my offsite forums but he manages to bypass it everytime.

What, if anything, can be done in NS to keep people like this from buggnig my region and others to no ends?

He is probably using a proxy since you IP banned him.
Obviously you know who he is when he signs up again? Or does he use the same account? If so ban his account or just delete it.
If he still comes back, which I suspect he will, then if your using invision, simply create a new group, add all your existing members into it. Then, the members group, which the annoying guy will be in, you just change the permission masks, so he doesnt see any of your forums. That way, at least he wont be able to post and spam your forums.

Hope that made sense and helps.

I've already figured out the proxy thing, I was just wondering if NS has a way to get around that?

I've already banned his name, but now he just signs up with a bunch of numbers following. He really can't do any damage as the entire forum requires membership except for one board.

It would suck if anybody with a proxy could come and go as they please, regardless of regulations meant to keep things relatively peaceful.

Which is actually the very reason you people scare me to death.

That being said, I'm glad there's something that can be done.

We have our methods, but obviously we cannot divulge these otherwise there are people who will figure out how to get around them.
Your best bet is to set all accounts to manual activation by the admin (yourself). This way, they cannot post until you've checked out the accounts. I have done this myself on the Europe* forums on occasions when we've come under attack from spammers.
You could also set it to e-mail activation, and just ban the e-mail address he's using. My area of expertise is PHPBB2, however I'm sure Invision or whatever you're using has a similar function.

I've got the forum problem pretty much solved now. The only place he can post is on the Registration board and he won't grab any attention from there.

Thanks for the info about 'having other ways' though. I'm not going to worry about trying to figure them out or anything, but it's comforting to know that they're there.

I've thought about this before. I also remember something from stayinvisible.com , use java, and that can detect the real IP.

I'm betting you guys have computer ID's (the HASH thing) and the login/logout record. The E-mail stuff. But what else?

Hmmmmmmmm...

I can't think of anything.
