Inappropriate Ads

I am wondering if there is any way to control some of the content of the ads at the top of the page. A lot of kids play this game, and the most frequent ad I have seen lately has been the Game Shadow add which proclaims "Do you find queuing for patches a pain in the ass? there is another way...Game Shadow. No queues, no hassle, no bullshit." And of course, three scantily clad butts are present in the ad.

I've been referring teachers to this site for use in their classes, and I'm going to get some angry phone calls if their students run into ads like these.

Is ad content within our realm of control at all?

I actually agree, but only in theory. What age are we talking about here? I was looking at worse when I was 8. Anyone that is directed to this site should be at least 10 and I can see worse when I turn on the TV and see a Bowflex commercial with scantily clad women getting sweaty.

In the case of student classes reading the forums, I think this might have relevance:

Please be aware that your students will still be able to browse the entire NationStates.net site (even if they're not logged in as a nation), and read posts in the NationStates forum. The game has more than a dozen Moderators who act swiftly to remove inappropriate material, but I can't completely guarantee that you (or your students) will never encounter it before they do. In addition, the site is relatively tolerant of political free speech, allowing discussion of issues that may be offensive to some people. In some sections of the forum, arguments about racism and religion are quite common, and ocasionally contributed to by people with extreme views. For this reason, you may want to instruct your students not to participate in the forum.

You know what. I hate "Moralisitc holier than thou" catholics like you. Catholics are ussually the biggest perverts of all. They just don't admit it.

Hehe. Just because the rest of the world has a sex stigma doesn't mean we shouldn't do our best to dissuade it. ;)

In any case, my point is that when schools are involved, it's not going to matter what age is participating. The teachers will not be happy if they see content like that, and even if they don't care, if any parent of a student or administration member saw it, there would be trouble. Schools don't have the liberty of deciding whether or not their students are mature enough to handle language and innuendo. They can only enforce standing policy.

If you don't have anything relevent to say, stay out of this thread and knock off the flamebait.

You are completely out of line. My nation name is a satire, not a fact. You're also stereotyping a religion. Take it to General and annoy people there.

The fact is that I am posting this as someone who knows a lot about educational policy because she is going to be a teacher quite soon, and as someone who has given her word that NS is a good place for kids to other teachers.

As for General Mike's comment...that is relevent, and I know the site rules here very well. I'm simply asking if something can be done about it, because it's rather blatant and much different than a student stumbling upon a thread with bad language or explicit sexual RP. It's the first thing you see when you access the forum.

First, off, you don't know what her affiliation is and this blatant flame is worse than any type of moral integrity ANYONE could place on another.

Second, I agree with Pope Hope, the most annoying part of that ad to me was that for days at a time, it was the ONLY ad I was getting from Jolt; since then, I've blocked images from their server.

I think that what General Mike said applies to this topic as well. Teachers have to realize that, as a free service, NationStates and the board hosters, Jolt, have to make money somehow (not in my NationState, but that's a different story). Perhaps you should inform those you pointed this site too about possible inappropriate site ads. Also, I would like to remark that any teacher that does NOT investgate this site before issuing it to their classes is a rather bumbling teacher. Even should it have a thousand things for it in the description, Iwould still check it out on my spare time to make sure that it fits my requirements for an educational tool and a 'moral' one at that.

Right, well, they may inspect the site beforehand and see the ad later. That's not so much of an issue.

Again, my point isn't about the disclaimer or any other content of this site...my point is a question directed at the game staff and no one else. IS there anything that can be done about it. Not why it should or shouldn't be a problem, but rather if there is anything that can be done about it at all that is in their hands.

I'm not sure whether this breaches our agreement with Jolt.
I'll consult with Sal.

You can control that though. Just don't click on the broadband link.

The Gameshadow one comes up, and sometimes it STAYS up there, never changing. It's mildly offensive and something students should not have to look at time and time again.

Not clicking certain topics in the forums is different. You can choose there. You can't choose what banners you see at the top of your browsers. (ignoring that you can block content using Mozilla)

It's been addressed (sorry, it was fixed a few days ago).
