Forums IPs vs. Nation IPs

Ok, since I'm at my college a lot more and filtering between internet hook-ups... will my nation be deleted if I'm only on the forums at school and home, so long as I don't log into my nation on my home computer which is what the IP address would be reading for that nation as its designation?

I just want to make sure, because this post is taking place at my university and should resolve to a .edu while my "in-game logins" should only resolve to my personal IP host that I pay to use at home.

I just want to make sure I can log into the forums from anywhere, so long as I don't do any in-game activities with the actual www.nationstates.net part.

I switch between seven computers on three different domains at the office, each with entirely different IP ranges, then come home and use the 4 computers on my home LAN. The domains actually resolve to two different countries (.com and .co.uk). I log into the forums under this account and a couple puppets, and manage all puppets and this UN nation indisriminately at whichever computer I happen to be working on.

As long as you only have a single UN nation under your name, you should be able to access any portion of NationStates from any computer anywhere. At least that's how I see it.

I don't really understand what you're asking... Are you asking whether your nation will die of inactivity if you're just using the forums, or what?

You can log into NationStates.net from anywhere, it doesn't matter. Generally if a UN multi scan shows a .edu address, it will be left alone proving there's no other evidence suggesting it is an actualy UN multi ring.

Ok. Let me clarify; I was tired when I wrote that, and I'm still tired... so, we'll see how this works.

I only log into my nation while on my home wireless connection; I never log in anywhere else (I did in the beginning before I knew it wasn't safe); however, I've been logging into the forums from my home wireless connection and my university.

I just wanted to make sure that logging into the forums from different IP addresses, while using my UN nation on the forums - which is Tuesday Heights, obviously - that I won't be picked up as a UN multi.

But, since you said that when UNers are picked up as being on an .edu IP, you typically ignore it, I guess it doesn't matter then. :p

This is the fundamental flaw in your question. There is no reason that I can see where it makes a difference where you log in, as long as you have only one UN nation.

If you have UN multies and use different IP addresses, Salusa has other tools to detect them. If you have only one UN nation on different IP addresses, there is no harm, no foul, and no reason to look for UN multies. Even if they ran a scan, all it would show is that TH logged in from different locations, which is entirely legal.

Your nation is safe if you follow the rules and have only one UN nation.

I think she's worried about this: If two or more UN member nations log into the forums, but not into the game, from the same IP, will they be detected as UN multies?

I know the answer, but I'm not sure if I am at liberty to discuss it; I'll have to clear the OPSEC issue with the other Mods (or with an Admin). Suffice it to say that if multying is detected from an educational IP, then we'll usually think twice before ejecting it from the United Nations.

What you propose should not get you into any trouble, Tuesday Heights.

So there is also no assumption that the nation is being "hacked" as well? Or is that only looked into if someone reports it?

All right, thanks, Cog!

That's what I was looking for... I'm just on various computers at school for my newspaper work and then the computer labs since I no longer live in the dormitories, and I like to sit back, and peruse the forums when I'm not busy and have no classes during the day before I get the change to go home.
