Watermarked Regions

I have noticed that in the UN page, theres a watermarked symbol background, (light picture behind the text for those who don't know)

This got me thinking, what if regions had this option, to post a small watermarked picture, or perhaps a light background. Obviously this would be through regional control. This way, the user would get more of a feel about what the region is about, and this option could even serve as alternative to regional flags, that some players have been wanting so desperately. Above all, it could perhaps brighten the game up and make it more attractive to new players.

Obviously, there would be a few problems with this. Rule breakers could upload offensive material, which would be far more noticable than a single nations flag. So perhaps they should be validated by the mod's or admin before hand, of course this is assuming they have time, which they may or may not have.

Also, if every single region had a background, I can see the server getting pretty full pretty damn fast, so this must be avoided for obvious reasons. Perhaps regions of a certain size may upload them? This would also cut down on the validating a mod may have to do. Also, another way on cutting down on the space issue, is much like the flags, have a size limit.

And the last problem that comes to mind, is that a particular background may not be suitable for users who are hard of sight or colourblind. I'm open to suggestions on this one, well and the rest.

Now I'm sure this idea won't be branded into the game code, but I would still like to hear players views on this idea, and even modifications to what I have said.

I never noticed that before... very interesting idea!

I like it. An idea to handle the storage problem is to make the region have their image stored elsewhere. A lot of sites do this with user images, and honestly, I'm kind of surprised this site allows users to store their flag images locally, so it wouldn't be a big deal at all.

I'll gladly lend you the support of my constituents on this issue, fellow Senator, if only you'd please sign this little bill I have proposing that we only have "real" regions in the game, instead of 2,000 regions consisting of the number 0 as their name in order to guarantee first placement, furthermore, these regions having one member only.

That's not what this thread is about.

This might be a good idea, but I don't know if the mods will be able to check everything... Much less approve all of the pics.

Create your own thread, please, if you wish to discuss that idea (which will never happen).

I very much doubt this will happen. A similar decision was already made when it was decided that [img] tags would not be allowed in factbooks.

I know, I never expected it too and I'm nto even asking if you can do it. Though personally I believe it would be a good feature and wanted to see other players views.

Thats what I would expect, perhaps a few pre-made watermarked pictures can be added, and the founder/UN Delegate can choose from a tile set.

Or even bettr... they DON'T get to choose! There is just a mysterious and arcane subroutine that chooses it for them! They hav to experiment with doing different things in the regions to see if they can figure out how to get and keep the one they like!!

Bwaa hahahaha

Hmmm... no. Maybe we could do something like that for the individual nations, depending on your UN category, but I think that would tax a LOT on the server...

It may tax a bit, but theres close to 30 UN categories I believe? thats only 30 faded images. Well that is alot really, but I bet the server gets more than 30 new custom flags eachday.

It's not server space (# of uploaded flags). It's bandwidth (# of page views). Adding a graphic increases bandwidth use and expense on every viewed page. It also slows down services to dial-up users.
