Reserved?

Was interested in creating a new nation.

I had a nation name picked out that I would like to use, but it says the nation name is reserved? Think the message mentions something like it used to exist. Is it possible to ever use that name?

No, once a nation has been made, even if it dies, the name is forever reserved. That's because you can get old nations revived, if you have to leave the game and ever want to come back... and some nations make a reputation for themselves and impersonations would just be bad.

That is a little annoying, though. Is it possible to set a time-out period for about a year or so, so that if no request for revival has been made in that year, then the name can be used again? If the mods feel for some reason that the nation made enough of an impression to not be succeeded, for example, authored a resolution or issue, were a region founder and no successor has been appointed (I can explain if you are confused on this one), or were a mod or administrator themselves, then they could somehow remove it from this countdown and let it be reserved for all time.

Some nations, of course, can't be revived because they were deleted for rule infringement instead of inactivity, so it is possible that they could be added to the "ok to re-use" pile within a month or so.

Obvious problems with this are that Sal or [violet] would both have their wrists fall off from carpal tunnel before they were through. Also, a lot of nations end up doing at least one of those things by the time they are through. For example, I have been appointed a Founder of a region (again, will explain if neccessary), authored a resolution and am attempting to get two more passed, and have attempted to write an issue.

This would probably be worth a mod's opinion. I personally have doubts about it myself, but we will see what Sal or whoever says.

No. It will be quite annoying if nation with the name of top spammer/flamer/etc. appears again. Create nation with the name of someone banned and we'll see what the mods will do to you :)

Hersfold, I vehemently disagree with you.

How is it fair that someone who may have had circumstances beyond their control not be able to continue on with an expired - died of inactivity - name if someone else can come along and not rightfully reclaim that nation?

That's not quite fair to them, now, is it?

It seems that all places that really exist are reserved.
Have they all been in game once or are they reserved since the beginning? (This even applies to the names in different languages.)
Names of some VIP (like Max Barry ;) ) are reserved, too. (But Silke Fritzen's isn't. (Yes, Silke Fritzen-Land is also one of my nations :D ))
Stars, planets and moons seem to be reserved as well.
Most names from Star Trek, Star Wars and The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy are not available either (but they have probably been used by fans).
What is with Urine? Did anyone really name a nation like this or is it reserved to inhibit such a behaviour?

It was probably killed off by the moderators.

If a name is reserved, then some nation has, at some point or other, had it.
If it has a scatological reference in it, then it's definitely not coming back. ;)

It is certainly simple enough to choose a similar name. ;) As far as I am concerned, I'd want to be completely original anyhow -- why deal with the history already attached to a used name?

IMO The only ones that it would be cool to be able to get are the ones that are reaal nations with flags in the drop-down box. Seems that all of those got snapped up right away and very few are still alive.

I don't want to use an old name either but it's funny to see which names have been used.
Did really every geographical name appear once?

Large company names are also reserved; were people once allowed to use them?

Were there any reservations at all when the game started?

I think there were some Jennifer Government related nations reserved; probably a few based around Max' name as well, to avoid impersonation.

I believe the reservation rule is a good one, and should stay intact. One can easily come up with an even better name if the first one they try is already taken.
