On tags and bumps:

No need to use 'em any more, folks.

Jolt has full keyword searching, unlike the author-only searching on the old forums, and you can also subscribe to threads. To do this, click on thread tools and then choose 'Subscribe to thread'.

The threads you have subscribed to will appear in a nice tidy list in your account profile, and you can refer to them at any time at your convenience.

So, in short, tags are obsolete, and also somewhat rude, as they spam up threads for no discernible gain. So are bumps. You can easily search for threads and even ensure you never have to search for them. So, try to kick the habit, kids.

Jawohl, Frau Kommandant! *_*\

Well, habits take time to buzz off, so expect people to keep on bumping and tagging and whatnot for some time to come, especially if you only post such a most usefull piece of advice of yours in only one of the numerous forums.

Isn't there a function to make a 'global announcement' that would cover all the forums right away? Or am I mixing different systems up? o.0

Tags are still useful [since the egosearch is better, rawr], bumps less so but still worthwhile. Neither are banned, either.

Oh good, I find tagging very annoying especially when the first page of a thread is mostly people trying to think up lame ways of saying they're tagging it.

Well, somehow this does not sound right to me... let's think of the world cup, we need about 90-110 people to participate so we need to bump our signup-thread for the sole purpose to make it visible to people who are new to NS and don't search our thread.

Just my 20 lil'kansu'ny.

Well, see, that's my point. No need to tag and egosearch when you can just subscribe to any thread that catches your fancy. It's like having your own private forum! :D

But we still need bumps. I mean, my Store Front thread needs to be constantly bumped so I can sell more. Same with most of my other threads. Many of them don't get replied to the 1st time round, especally if none of the nations I RP with are on at the time

One could (and I would, hence why I have never bumped a single one of my threads) argue that a thread that needs to be bumped isn't worth reading.

If your RP partners aren't online when you do the thread -> TG the goddamn link.

Bump, to bring the thread to the top of the page for others to see it, is still pretty handy though

That'd be a pretty dumb arguement. Sometimes threads just get left, or dropped for a couple of hours, but bumping brings them back to life.

Tag are, however, a handy way to let someone know that you're reading their thread.

Storefront threads are probably better off placed in the International Mall, an independent board that already contains many such threads. If your store is big enough, they give you your own forum, and you can put a link to your storefront in your signature so people can easily find it.

As for letting someone know you're reading their thread, if you insist on tagging, and you don't want to actually RP in the thread, at least try to do a nice entertaining literary-type tag... page after page of *TAG* just isn't good reading.

I've done all of the entire block of suggestions you've suggested well in advance plus an independent website, and still have had only a few people look at my storefront. With an average of one purchase a week at best, I've found bumping to be the most effective method to increase readership (unless thread hijacking is now an option). Besides I don't know how many people want to search through 3 pages of posts, let alone 30, to find a thread that they have not subscribed to that catches their fancy. Many people have their own highly specific role-playing styles. (Finding a nice non military based role-play amongst all the recent crop of "How do you like me?" posts in I.I. comes to mind).

A valid point... perhaps an international mall sticky in II might be an idea, and people can put links to their storefronts on the Mall there.

(NOT saying it'll happen, I'm just thinking out loud. So don't harass me for it.)

What you say?
EDIT: it seems microprint is at least readable at even the lowest size. O well :P

On Topic: Tagging I can understand now that we have the subscirbe feature, but the whole point of bumpiing is to get the attention of people who might be interested but aren't looking for the topic. It has a point on any forum with above-average activity.

I still don't understand the concept of tag.

Since the Search function was disabled on the old server, those who wished to return to a topic later would "tag" it so that when they searched for topics they've posted in later, they could go back to those threads and post in them.

If I found an interesting thread, I always made a comment in it. If not, I posted nothing.

And if everyone were like that, the world would be a better place. However, not everyone who saw a good RP (for RPers) or debate (for General ... although it wasn't as common there ...) or whatever else felt like making a comment.

Personally, if I ever saw something I liked I stored the URL to the thread elsewhere (notepad == ductape for computer) and came back later.
