New Telegram Pop-up Indicator

Another idea of mine, hope this one works...

An off-site forum I post on (http://s2.invisionfree.com/The_North_Pacific/index.php if anyone cares) has a Personal Messaging system which has a pop-up message appear whenever you have a new message in your inbox. There are only two places to check on how many telegrams you have here: Your own nation's page, and the telegram menu itself. So, would it work to write in a similar system here?

Obvous downsides I already thought up:
- There would have to be a way to mark what messages you had already read as well. Otherwise, it would keep popping up everytime you hit a link.
- With every other person and their brother having a pop-up blocker, this could become a little pointless. Most can be deactivated for a site, but they would have to know to do this first.
- It would obviously be a lot of work on the mods.

Just an idea. If you vote in the poll above, please post here as well to voice your opinions.

I love this idea, I hate having to click back-and-forth between what I'm doing to get to check my telegrams.

If it is optional or can be disabled, then I would think it is really up to the moderators to decide if it is something they like. I can see people liking it, and the idea does have merit.

Hersfold, by the time you're done with us, Max is gonna have to put you on the pay roll in order to start building all of these good ideas of yours into the game. A pitty the mods are paid only in non-ending complaints from the rest of us. But on the positive side, you'd get a cool new logo for your country. ;)

It would be enough to have a little number next to telegrams underneath your country name. Either a number of new telegrams you have, or the total number.

That way you could at least see if you had new ones without having to go back to your country's screen or click on telegrams.

Agree with Erastide. Popups seem a bit extreme, and would probably take more work to build in. Then again, I'm simply happy that the game hasn't experienced more tech difficulties since the change over...*knocks on wood*

Wouldn't work for most browsers, since alot of them have pop-up blockers.

Or, perhaps, instead of a popup, have a little table at the top of the page with a "You have X new telegrams" in it, with the text as a link that takes you to your telegram box.

No pop ups, when I get pop ups on NS that is when I take my mouse and run.

but some other signal might be nice.

Lol! I wish!

Anyway, it probably should be optional, with an option to turn it on or off on the settings page. That way those few without pop-up blockers could avoid it if they wanted to.

Erastide: Another good idea, one which would involve much less work on the mod's part. I will see if I can tweak the poll to include that, but if not I will make a new thread and post the link here.

And the rest of you, that is one of the main concerns I had with my idea - pop-ups and their blockers. Why we got the poll.

Which, by the way, has had 8 people vote in it:
2 for "Do it!"
2 for "Ok, but I won't use it"
and 4 for "Don't bother"

Can't change the poll, so here is the second thread:

To both ideas. I like them, both of them. However I'm sitting back a bit from NS. I have made notes of both ideas.

I double checked, and found the telegram number on your nation's page. Regarding having it in the side bar, that is not as easy as it would require reloading the side-bar much more commonly. This is something that would have a negative impact on usability (especially for dial-up users). As far as the pop-up goes, if we did it, it would be as a Javascript alert message box. Not very intrusive at all, and, of course, it would be optional.

With the refresh idea in mind, I think I'd have to vote for the javascript pop-up. I *think* there are still a few people using dial-up, although I don't personally know a lot. ;)

Hm. Ok, well, your idea is still out there, and still well ahead in the polls.

This one is tied again:

New page again. I hate it when this happens.

There are other features I'd rather see here.

Pop ups will not ever be one of them. Anywhere.

My site has a message alert that flashes at the top of the browser. that should be more than sufficient since as noted - Many , Many floks are so tired of seeing pop ups and pop unders that they (like me) disable or block them completely.

With the Upcoming service pack for XP - Most IE Browsers will have Pop up blocking enabled by Default (default of all those ad pop ups, but I digress).

So even tho the survey is biased (2 choices to agree only one choice to disagree - and no fence sitters) I cast my vote strongly into the "Mods make new issues, Get me a way to do my own forum titles, Let me load my own avatars - and take a break afterwards before wasting one single Keystroke on pop ups that nobody but a select few will ever see".

Erastide also thought of a new idea, involving the actual telegram link in the side bar. Don't know if you've seen that thread or not yet.

And actually, the "I don't care" choice you are looking for is sort of number two. Sorry if it's not clear.
