To show signatures (I'm not so sure about avatars, but it's an option to show it), go into your profile, then go to "Edit Options", and check "Show Signatures" and "Show Avatars".

I'm not so sure that it belongs here, or if it's been posted about yet, but I may as well let everyone know!

You can also allow visible images through the tag, and choose different skins. A lot of people overlook these options and complain about the lack there of.
