Jolt Features?
I'm guessing we don't get to have an avatar? (I would love to be able to have my Flag for an avatar and to have a signature that can link to a bunch of nation related things... how come we can't have the signature..? It's really not fair :)
Then how come no signature is posting with my posts? :)

I'm just mad we can't put images in our sigs.
Hi hi eveyone...just the answers to a few of the questions being raised.
Forum speed.
Should be sorted v soon - we blame keef - we asked for swords he brought daggers.
Avatars
Jolt is actually anti avatars because in the dim and distant past when 99% of folks were on dial-up we didn't want the forums "lagged" by ooodles of meaningless pictures. However we incorporated a set of forums where some users had been entitled to avatars and we had complaints from existing jolt users that it was not fair that they couldn't have them. So we created a 'premium forum account' (https://secure.jolt.co.uk/index.php?page=premiums.htm) whereby you can have an avatar and we disable the forum ads. The only other ways to get an avatar are:
1. Make 10,000 posts
2. Become a moderator
3. Do something supremely good/bad that an Admin feels deserves an avatar
Searching
Currently disabled until the forum performance/maintenance is sorted
Editing
15mins is the rule apologies to those who wish to edit typos etc.etc.
Images and the like
You can include - it's just that we won't pay for the bandwidth + there's performance issues. So you can put up a pic, only you need to host it on your own webspace.
The other queries can be sorted by fiddling with your settings to show/hide certain features....have a tinker some of the forum features are quite neat.
So in anticipation of the performance issue being resolved v.soon - Enjoy.
P.
Then I will probably end up establishing my own off site forum for people to use. Jolt sucks.

I'm fine with everything except the 15 minute edit rule. It's stupid, people on Nationstates need the ability to edit at anytime.
im fine with most of it but that 15 minute limit will make me leave. *shrug* - NS should have never moved to jolt.

amen, Max should've straight out told us the pros and cons about this as to pics and editing. If he had told us we never would've moved. I want the old forum!!!
It wasn't up to us *shrug*

Crap!!! We'll I guess we have to move the national leaders lists, storefronts, factbooks, and other whatnot offsite. *sigh* More work.

What I'm wondering is whether we'll get to access threads that were started before the move. I have an RP that I started and I can't get to it, because the last time I posted there it was before the switch to Jolt.
BTW: I did like the old forums as well, despite their faults. They were so convenient, in many ways...

amen, Max should've straight out told us the pros and cons about this as to pics and editing.Um. Pic rules haven't changed in the slightest. When did you ever upload an image to the old NS server? We've always had to host our own images (or hotlink them from some poor sap).

If you can't see Eh! Steve, you need to adjust the settings in your profile. The default settings are to not show images, sigs, and avatars. You can turn all those on.

Go here- http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=297871 Look at the list of Ex- Nations, how the bloody, blue blazes am I supposed to keep that updated if I can't edit it when needed?
If this can't be altered you blokes will have effectively destroyed a large part of this game! :mp5:

I'm with Doujin. I was under the impression that the reason for the switch was to increase performance and decrease frustration with the forums. So far we've definitely gotten neither. I can understand the performance issues, as they obviously had no way to prepare for such a massive influx of users and crap, but the forums themselves are going to piss off every single NS player that uses them, mainly due to the lack of an edit feature. And "Oops, sorry, deal with it," isn't going to cut it with a lot of people. Having to either move everything off site or repost something every time you want to change it does nothing but turn massive numbers of people away from the game and help turn the forums into spam central.

PanZer, I don't mean any offense and get the impression that you're the big hauncho on the Jolt forums, but the edit rule sucks. There are a lot of roleplayers on these forums, including myself, that believe that if nothing else can remain the same, the edit function is what would have to stay. It isn't a matter of want, it's a matter of necessity if the roleplay on these forums is going to continue as it always has.
EDIT: And btw, if you want to fix the performance issue, the mass exodus from NS by a no-fix on the edit issue is a surefire way to do it. It'd suck that the forum move that's supposed to make NS better destroyed it, don't you think?

Granted, I can always edit by nature of being a Mod (which is why we didn't notice the rule when beta-testing, by the by), but I don't find myself needing to edit during role-play.
I don't understand why this is the major deal-breaker that it seems to be. Is it primarily for lists and storefronts? Or do you rutinely go around editing old RP posts?
That being said, there may be a way to have this changed, but I'm pretty sure calling Jolt's version of [violet] "the big hauncho", insulting his forum, and then demanding that he change the forums because you feel it to be critical to your enjoyment.
Scandavian States
16-07-2004, 08:45
If he is Jolt's version of [violet], then I guess he is the head hauncho around here. Also, I did not insult his forum, I stated an opinion on one feature of it and probably wouldn't have been so vehement about that opinion if he'd simply said something along the lines of "we'll see". And if you'll look at the multiple threads that have opinions about the edit feature, you'll see that I'm not the only one.
And while we're at it, let's consider something else. If the edit function stays as it is, what's going to happen is new storefront threads being created for one new piece of technology, it will basically sap bandwidth with increasingly huge amounts of what will in effect become spam. Granted, people can take things like that off-site, but not everyone has even basic HTML skills to do that kind of thing. Seems to me you're fixing old performance issues but setting up another one for the future.

Let's see this a tad in perspective people.
Yes, we've all gotten used by now to the ability to edit our own posts indefinitely. If this hadn't been an option from the beginning, what would we have done?
I'm imagining storefronts would go through versions. People would know to check a bit further down, and occasionally a storefront owner would post minor updates in the thread, and people would know to check for those too. And so once in a while an entire storefront thread would be simply abandoned and a new version started, whenever the owner felt it was time. Depending on the severity of changes being made, ofcourse.
Then there's the issue of stickied threads which change. I happen to maintain one of them, and IMHO it wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to start it from scratch so once in a while. I only would need to get a mod to switch the sticky flags. Same applies for other threads, some of which are updated by mods anyways. In those cases nothing changes.
What we would lose is the ability to maintain stable URLs. As threads are recreated, their URLs will change. I don't know how much of a problem that will be to people as I don't use that at all myself. Perhaps re-enabling the search feature, in due time, would make up for that?

At least have some respect, we all complained on the last forum so Max went through all of this trouble just for us... and now we're all complaining again. Ok, so Jolt isn't perfect, but it's damn better than nothing.
fyi we've taken off the 15min edit rule.
we'll see how things go - just-in-case it causes us problems elsewhere...

I have to say the support we're getting from Jolt is very good. Other hosts would just ignore the NS community completely. Thank you for your support PanZer.

Thank you, PanZer, sorry if I was rude earlier. I'm curious why you think/know it'll cause problems elsewhere. Also, can the time length on the edit feature be adjusted for this forum only or is it for all Jolt forums?
/me wonders what breed of llamas could manage to abuse the edit feature.

You have to subscribe to them first. You can have it automatically subscribe you with a post, but, again, that's only for posts post-move.

Try logging in through Jolt instead of NationStates. It runs with almost no timeouts and server crashes on me if I go through Jolt, and almost always never even loads from NationStates except on good times.

I'm guessing Jolt features.
I liked phpBB better, or maybe it's just the Jolt layout. It's rather confusing...:P And it's integrated into all the other Jolt forums.
