Is there some rule about images not loading when hosted on a freepage? Or am I just not doing it right?

Aye, that's cause geocities is not for image hosting. They won't allow you to hotlink like that.
I think Angelfire will, or if not, some sites out there specifically for image hosting.

Try www.imagestation.com
Once you get it hosted put the url into the IMG tags
Like so:
[code:1:4dac206d07][img]http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid118/p7f0b1a03b446b72add65abad264cd2c7/f8904084.jpg[/img][/code:1:4dac206d07]
becomes http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid118/p7f0b1a03b446b72add65abad264cd2c7/f8904084.jpg
