Avatars when we move to jolt

would it be possible to have your national flag as an avatar on jolt? it would help dealing with people with questionable flags

Not to mention the fact it would help give people like Infinite Loop a better chance to show off their mad flag skillz.

It sort of undermines the point of NS forums though

But overall, it's not a bad idea....just the way that people will use it is what worries me.

Then again, not my site to say what can and cannot be done.

Eh, we have mods to take care of the abusers. I think it'd be a great idea. It'd promote the idea of making orginal flags instead of just choosing one from the list.

Just so everybody knows the current reasons for things...

Currently, we have no avatars because when this forum was first coded, it had to be heavily modified by [violet] and [dredd] to make things work they way they were supposed to, especially since phpBB wasn't made with NationStates in mind (ie: forum accounts being linked to nations). Avatars were one of the things that got axed in that original mangling of the forum code. As time went on, it became painfully obvious that allowing avatars would only increase the load on an already highly abused server.

So what about Jolt?

Currently, members would have a series of Avatars to choose from. After a certain number of posts, custom avatars would be allowed. I'm guessing this will be changed for the NS forum. I'm all in favor of nation flags for avatars, but I don't know if they'll be added. Personally, I'm going to assume that they'll be completely disabled at first, and then we'll figure out what we're going to do about them.

"aww , shucks"

serously I would suggest naitonal flags as avatars, only image scaled to 107x71 or whatever makes them small by their size.

Hrm, actually, the biggest problem with flags as avatars (now that I think about it) is that I believe they get forced into being square, which would make some look really bad.

What's an avatar in terms of posting in forums?

perhaps you could switch off the avatar if it looks bad?

An avatar is a custom pic. I'm all in favour of flags as avatars, and I think, and believe that vBulletin does indeed squeeze avatars into squares [yikes]. Switching off avatars could be a good option, but it will definitely look messy when some people have avatars and some don't.

You could further mangle the code to include a letterbox-like bar at the top and bottom of the avatar, to keep the flag proportions.

Hmm, on the invision forums for the SP, my old flag was my avatar until I went with the new Gorby head one and when it was squashed it kept it rectamngular, although not sure about how other sites would handle it.

Any inexperienced admin can set the max dimensions of an avatar easily in php. There are no physical restrictions for avatars in a php forum. A max width of 110 pixels works best on my forum.

Example:
http://67.18.37.16/376/83/upload/p992951.jpg

Nice dimensions for an avatar, and work for a flag as well.

The problem, Kitty, is that our forum will be integrated with Jolt's - in that it will be a sub-forum. I don't think vB3 allows options to be different across the forum. Any changes to the major configuration objects like that would need to be made globally, so Jolt's regular userbase would be affected as well.

My fault. I always see things to simple. I understand. Who needs an avatar, anyway. One less query in the database 8)

Jolt allows for signatures, yes. I don't believe there's any plans to disable them, but I'm hardly an authority on the move.

It doesn't take that much space to write an offensive sig, or put an offensive link in one's sig.

For the record (not that anyone cares), I'm against having sigs. People manage to abuse the copy-and-paste system badly enough as it is (letila comes to mind, but others have been just as bad if not worse). Even limiting the size and disallowing images is problematical.

I also don't like having custom avatars, they tend to be more trouble than they're worth. Flags as avatars would be supremely cool, though.

I love sigs, it gives you a chance to make yourself noted.

For something other then being a "nOOb".

And I just love currently being able to put on my little, errr, or not so, flag on, plus it acts as a link to my nation, so people can see not only my flag skill, but track me down and see what my nation is actual like. Did I mention I've an ego problem? :D

(* Snort, "lol" :) )

Any-hoo, I think if we can make it so people are - reasonably - sensible about it, nothing too over the top, it could be a good thing, ya know. Still,

"The moderators, will ... decide, the likes of me, ... abide"

(For all the ABBA fans out there ... )

Maybe my flag is a little big ... Hmmm ...

Sigs with limits aren't that bad. GameFAQs comes to mind for having a limit of 2 lines of text and no images (throughout the board, but thats besides the point). They aren't that intrusive at all, and it gives you some room to put general information about whatever at the bottom of your post.

Could be useful, like the one I never use (see below) is, could be a bit of info about your country (for RPers), your Invasion/Defence force (for gameplayers), or just randomness (for anyone in particular)

I personally like changing my sig as occasion dictates. For instance, in Tech and Gameplay my sig is:

The Liberal Unitary Republic of Goobergunchia
Founder, Democratic Underground region
GamePlay Academy Project Member

While in Moderation it's:

The Liberal Unitary Republic of Goobergunchia
Non-Moderator
Founder, Democratic Underground region
GamePlay Academy Project Member

In the UN forum it's:

Lord Evif, Goobergunchian UN Ambassador
[UN Nation: Terminated California]
Founder, Democratic Underground region

And I usually don't have one at all in NS or II.
