General Website surf-ability

I was wondering if it is at all possible to ease the way people surf the site. For example, I would like to browse the lists of nations and regions. Currently I can only view the first five or so, and the last 5 or so. If I wanted to view the middle section, page 500 or nations begining with 'M', I would have to sit patiently through the entire list, while skipping 3-4 pages ar a time. I believe it would be easier for browsers if there were an alphabetical listing and numerical index (scroll down box) on these pages. I know it may take a long time to write the code necessary, and since I know nothing about that, I am not able to offer my assistance. Is there a group of moderators/admins who could begin addressing this issue?

It's been on my Todo list, but has been pushed back behind such critical things as Jolt Integration.

Of the 900+ pages for each nation/region I Should be able to go to the 'G' section in an alphabetical list that looks like:

0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z

Another and additional way would be to go to the Page #. In stead of seeing :

1, 2, 3, 4 .... 995, 996, 997, 999, 1000

I could click on a scroll down box and select one of all the page numbers.


Who's ears does this need to reach!

I think this kind of seach-ability would greatly increase the U.N. ability to find and send aid to, nations that are forgotten about. Otherwise you have to know the name of the country you are looking for.

I have thought of another thing, this should be applied to the forum pages though.

Currently the forums are organized by date only, with the most current posts on top. I suggest that it be possible to organize each forum by clicking on [Topics] [Replies] [Author] [Views] [Last Post] which would then organize all subjects by the selected option.

For example, if I were to click on [Replies] the current page would refresh itself with all subjects organized by most posts on top. If I were to click on it again it would organize all posts by least replies first.

You may want to change the way in which you organize the above buttons that would organize the forums. I refer you to the following website for a view of what this system looks like:

If this is used here at NationStates I believe it will have a significant impact on the number of subjects posted on a daily basis. Regular members of this site will know where to go to find thier on going discussions, and enabling them to reach it faster, than having to search through each page, as topics get burried deeper and deeper each day. New visitors would not have to create a new subject every time they have a question, the sticky threads could be organized to direct them to thier questions, that way issues of RolePlay or real life discussions (technical, or otherwise) could remain near the top.

What do you think?

Two things about the forum sorting:

1) Every change that is made to the forums is to improve their load times, and this certainly doesn't sound like it would do that.

2) It wouldn't last long anyway since NS is moving to a different server and the forums will be integrated into the forums on www.jolt.co.uk (the new host).
