How The Tax Rate Works (a question, not an answer)

I have been sitting at 100% for...um...ever...and have been experimenting a bit with ways to try and bring the rate down. Unsuccessfully.

My question (probably to the mods) is this:
Is the tax rate just a variable (integer?) that is capped, for display purposes only (nation page) at <100>"%", but which is actually an open-ended number? The reason I ask this is that there have been a number of instances in which I have purposely picked an answer that I know brings down the tax rate (significantly), and my rate remains at 100%, which leads me to believe that this must be the case, and that my tax rate is probably sitting at something like 285.

I do know that it used to be that not answering issues (or perhaps dismissing large quanitites of them) made oyu tax rate fall. What you describe does make it sound like an open-ended number, though.

Are you sure about that, because I dismiss at least half the issues I get?

I don't know if they changed it since my early days (way back a year ago now), but I spent my first two months of NS playing around with issues. Yeah, they affected tax rate at some point. I think inactivity was what lowered tax rates. Dismiss and ignore issues, and your government shrinks.

I have a number of puppets for which I never (or rarely) answer issues, and this hasn't happened to any of them. Although I tend to leave them in vacation mode a lot, and leave the issue banks full, rather than actively dismissing all the time, so that may negate the possible effect that you are talking about. I shall try that out with one of my nations.

Raem, I'm almost positive that inactivity does absolutely nothing to your stats. Dismissing issues changes nothing. I've spent my year plus and fifty plus puppets playing around with issues 8)

I don't know about the tax rate though. Usually I keep most of my puppets tax rates below fifty percent, although I have noticed that upon reaching 100% it seems extremely difficult to lower it again.

It's clear how tax rates work people.

Firstly, when the tax issue comes up, choosing anything but the option that reduces taxes will keep the same or raise them.

Secondly, investing in ANY government program increases taxes. Be it rehabilitation for drunkards, government subsidies to a corporation, revamping an education system, etc., etc.

First, dismissing or ignoring issues has 0 effect on your nation, literally. Nothing happens when you do it.

Next, tax rate is open-ended. By way of example, let's say that your displayed tax rate is based on a 0-100 scale stored on your nationdata. Thus, if your "taxrate" tag was "18", your tax would be 18%. Pretty simple. The problem happens at the extremes of that range. What if you're at "100" and you answer an issue that raises taxrate by 2? Your taxrate become "102". The nation displays it as 100%, but now you need to lower it by 3 to see any effect.

This is why older nations tend to have a harder time adjusting things. Many of the variables are open ended. For instance, my taxrate is something like -30 or -40. I can fund quite a few things before there's a noticable increase.

Thank you Hack!

Ha! I was right. I feel like I'm in the Matrix and I can see the "code". LOL.

Why isn't the tax rate capped (at both ends), if I may ask?

Why isn't the tax rate capped (at both ends), if I may ask?

No, man! You sound like a parent that doesn't have a real answer. I already have two that do that. :?

This secret (well, not so much anymore) uncapped tax rate is giving everyone false hope!

(BTW, can you please, please look up my actual tax rate for me, so I know how much trouble I'm in? Thank you.)
