how does population work?

I'm trying to figure out how our population is calculated.... feel free to refer me to another thread if the answer's there.

What I've figured out.... It appears to be a linear function. This is based on about 16 nations.

My problem is that the function comes out as:

pop in millions = 5.95(number of days a nation) - 58.947 million

This makes no sense, since a nation with 0 days should have a negative population. :( But it's really, really accurate. What's wrong???

it's not linear but random

well it's not completely random. It's not like i have a population of 10 million or 10 billion after a year.

It's good to within a few million. It predicts you to within about 10million. :)

I still have a population of 5 million. (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=c0bra) I'm special.

There seems to be an odd 5-million bug going around....

Yesterday on IRC I was chatting with Stephistan and Tactical Grace as they were deleting nations with offensive names, etc., and one of the nations named was "Dead Democrats" (now DEAT). Said nation had a population of 5 million and a most recent government activity of 63 days.

Initially population growth is small and follows an exact pattern. 5 million, 6 million, 7 million, etc... I'm expecting this is implemented in a simple table. After the growth-path in that table is completed, population growth is liniair with a small randomization factor.

And then there's the population bug which will cause nations to not grow or grow faster...

yeah, there was this nation the other day with a pop of 5 mil. Moving out of your region and back in will solve it. I did mention th pop bug, but received no reply.
