Nation Referals

While chatting with another player, Diminix, he suggested a new nations referals plan in which, every new nation created would have the option to enter the name of another nation that suggested Nationstates to them (if applicable).

I then took that idea and built on it.

With this new nation referal program, I propose that a log file be kept of all referals, and at the end of every month, the results are posted in a thread (that will most likely be stickied in gameplay).

Also, a rewards program should be started. Most referals gets.. extra population, custom nation titles (if under 500mill) or custom forum titles (just examples, feel free to expand on these).

Of course, IP addresses would have to be detected to prevent abuse..

Indeed. I advertise NationStates everywhwere anyway, already got 3 from the MozillaZine forums (Mozilla User Suport forums) in the past 2 days.

ive directly signed up 3 friends, and one of them signed up another one:)

I'd like a Moderators (or Tech Modling's) response/opinion on this if at all possible.

Major problem I can see is people creating nations themselves and using their main nation as 'referal'.

The point is also lost on me... It's not as if Mr. Barry is getting paid for having more nations on this server...

As I stated, measures would have to be taken to prevent abuse. These measures could include some of the same one's used to detect UN multiples.


The point is also lost on me... It's not as if Mr. Barry is getting paid for having more nations on this server...

Not directly, but having more users sign up for NationStates means that that many more people will see his ads for Jennifer Govnerment and Syrup. Some of which people would buy the books, and also spread word around about Max and NationStates, creating more and more profit in the long run.

And having a rewards system for the referals will encourage users to introduce others to NationStates, therefore giving Max free advertising, and subsequently, moola.

Even if I had the power/authority to stop you, I wouldn't. This is exactly what superiors are for. He's overruled my judgement/ideas a few times.

I think this idea would take lot to implement and much more manpower than NS currently has, as the moderators are volunteers, they can't be expected to do EVERYTHING this site comprises of at times. They do a good job as is, and that needs to be taken into account as well.

How much more man power would it really take? A simple code could be written to take the name entered in the "Referal" feild, and place it in a file. Then I'm pretty sure there's a script that could sort all the names, making them easy to count.

Why not just utilize this strategy in your own region?

I sent it in a little while ago, and according to Max's site, he is 8 weeks behind on his emails, so in about 6-7 weeks I should get a response.
