Server Issues - Sorry but...
I need to vent....
ARGH!
right.
When is your migration taking place?
Are you going to be increasing the bandwidth?
Are you still going to host on one server?
When do you back up your database? (in GMT please)
I ask because this is getting to be stupid. If I want to post something I am lucky ...very lucky if it goes through the first time.
This is getting irritating to the point of making me want to drop the entire excercise of involving my time with NationStates.

It IS a pain ... do you copy what you post, so's you don't have to type it out each time? That makes it a little less frustrating - though I've given up for the day before too... and I'm much newer here than you so your aargh levels must be much higher ....

It depends to be honest...if its a long post I do it in Word...otherwise I type directly in to the dialogue box...
yeah my argh levels are up there but then there are others who have been here for an awfull lot longer...
Bump
Just wondering if there are answers to my questions...
If not please indicate this...

I can't put a date on the migration, we are still testing stuff.
Yes, we should have NS hosted on professional gaming servers which should allow the forum to operate much more quickly. Not sure if it will be on one server or distributed, though.
Not sure to which database you are referring, but after the (I think) 9am-1pm UN update, during which the forums work fine, they collapse. Thus I avoid using the forums during the afternoon and early evening (I live in the UK).

Thanks TG!
I'm not a tester so I can't offer any assistance on that side of things but I am a networks/server guy.
At a guess you are running MySQL on the back end of the php software? If so you can distribute it and load balance it as well...but then I guess you are looking at a low cost solution...but if you are expecting an increase in users (esp if you are releasing more books/movie whatever) you guys ought to look to implementing something that will accomodate such an increase.
You don't need a high power gaming server because you are not looking at serving out graphics are you? ARE YOU??:))
The database I refer to would be the stuff runinng in the backend that 'stores' our posts...
I was wondering if you guys were backing up inthe afternoons (UK time) as that when I go on line and have a utter bloody nightmare trying to post...
anyway....if you guys want a hand or whatever I am more than happy to offer my services free of charge (how magmanimous!)
No...I have no wish to be a mod (god forbid!) or anything like that...just want to offer a helping hand...
Heh, it's OK. We've got the trusty SalusaSecondus on our side.

Not wanting to step on anothers toes of course...
Well the offer is there and offered with all good intent.

Thanks for the offer, but we have a bunch of real experts (and that doesn't include me) working on the transfer. It's a weird, idiosyncratic beast.

Fair enough...I can understand that its a weird and idiosyncratic beastie....I guess that over 10 years in this game does not qualify me as an expert though 'eh?
well thought I'd offer....no fears. Hope yer migration goes off ok! I'd love to see a blog of the fun and games LOL :)

First, I realized that something that I posted can be misread. When I posted "real experts" that was not to imply that you are not a real expert, just that we do have some (looking back now, it was badly worded).
Also, the idea of a journal of getting this game up and running could be interesting. Maybe I'll do it.

If you can create a list of the stats you require from a server (you guys got my email on file), then I will see what kind of pricing scheme I can set up for you, if you want to get a few quotes.

We have a server. We are busy working out the bugs in the code, and the forum integration. I am predicting that the change over will be in the not too distant future.

:) no fears....I know what you meant....just thought I'd prod you...one of the probs with the innernet...no non verbal comms...
I'd love to read a journal like that....hell...its a big migration and I for one would learn something from it....as anyone does from any project...
Cheers!
