Speed Improvement suggestion

11-03-2004, 09:31
This ought to have been mentioned before, but I have read
14 screens of threads and haven't found it. I don't know what is a
reasonable number of screen to read before it is acceptable to
post a new thread. I don't have time to read them all ...

It is the gifs which are really killing us. They use up too much
bandwidth. What we need, ideally, is a way to download messages
and have, instead of gifs, a thing 'click me to get the gif'. Then
you only see the pictures you want to see, rather than those that
the submitter wanted everybody to see.

If that is too hard, a way to say, no gifs for me now, would be
less ideal but still a large improvement.

I realise that it is unlikely that this can be done with the current NS,
but perhaps for the next one? These sorts of things are professional
concerns for me. (My company makes a product for reading and
subscribing to large number of messages.)

A problem with current user interfaces, is that it is based on the idea
that the PUBLISHER of the information should have complete control
over the presentation. This is good for business, because publishers
are the ones doing the bulk of the paying, and they want to make
their marketing and sales pitches work exactly as they planned.

This is far less than ideal for readers of the information, who would
like to change things to suit their own convenience. They want
larger type, and a way to display things so that the colour-blind
can receive the information, and all sorts of things designed for
their convenience.

It makes for neat problems. Is here the place to discuss things like
this? Or is there some other better place? I am just getting my
feel for this place.

Thanks very much,

You know what's the best way to improve the forums speed? Close down those 'General' forums! People talk about non-NS related topics that are either explicit or liberal. If we flush away the turds perhaps we'll be left with some quality connection.
