This IP address ([my IP]) has been banned from NationStates. One of Paradise.net.nz's users has been persistently spamming NationStates with pornography and other offensive material, and, despite repeated requests, Paradise.net.nz has failed to respond to our requests to take action against this user. Your ISP routes your internet access through the same IP address as the attacker, so we cannot block him/her without blocking you, too. Unfortunately, we have no choice but to deny service to all Clear.net.nz's clients, including Paradise customers. We will continue to attempt to elicit a response from Paradise.net.nz or Clear.net.nz, and as soon as they take action against this user, we will lift the ban. Until then, however, to protect NationStates and its players, the ban must stand. I'm sorry you're caught in the middle. NationStates admin. admin@nationstates.net

Recently, evertime I hit NS, that is the message that greets me instead of the usual homepage for logging in and so forth. I can only access the forums and that's about it.

My ISP is not the one mentioned above, so why have I been banned. Judging from the past contents posted by me, how are they considered offensive?

Paradise.net.nz is my ISP. I'm not sure why tha'ts included on the banned list.

I know because I ws there, in IRC as it was happening.

hope this clears it up for ya, sorry to hear about your possible wrongful banning but it was necessary.

How did you know that? Looks like that kind of vandalism is pretty F.U.B.A.R. but do I deserve to be punished?

I know this because I was Online when it happened and was helping the mods track down the new spammers as they showed up.

I would guess it was a temporary measure to make them stop. Hopefully they'll unban your range soon...

I can't really say too much about this either, but figured that you'd like a formal response from one of the NS officials.

Basically, the message that you got sums it up well. Someone from that ISP has been abusing our boards (and thus breaking their TOS), and we have been unable to block them. Unfortunately, the ISP has not responded to our numerous requests for communication, thus, we have blocked the ISP.

This is really not something that we wanted to do, but unfortunately, we had no choice. Hopefully the situation will be fixed shortly. We are doing everything that we can, but at this point, we are waiting upon the ISP.

Pretty much what Sal said- the other night, it took four game mods the better part of two hours to keep up with this guy, and the gracious assistance of the regulars of the #nationstates channel who helped by alerting us to puppets we might have missed. I got no sleep that night because of the Jackson spammer :cry: And he's been doing this off and on for something like two months now, through easily hundreds of nations.

You know, Sino, it occurs to me that the actions of your ISP are preventing you from visiting a website. If only they would talk to us, this could be fixed . . . . Perhaps an email or two from their customers might encourage them to contact us.

I (also customer of paradise.net.nz) already sent an email to paradise.net.nz about 24 hours ago, requesting that paradise.net.nz "cooperate with the administrators of nationstates.net to identify the user who the ban is targeted against and take whatever action is necessary". According to the auto-reply I received, they will respond to my email within four business days.

So hopefully I'll have some sort of response from them by Thursday evening, NZ time. I imagine there'll be more chance of them doing something about this if other people email them too.

this is interesting, I was about to recommend that the Paradise users who are blocked contact the ISP themselves and demand that justice be done, because if enough users gripe then they may act,

Yes, I have a permanent ignore on that ISP in my IRC client. The reason being, a rather prolific flamer-spammer who hit the NationStates channels a few months ago. Probably the same guy, I now suspect. It is superfluous with the ban in place on the channel itself, but I am not taking any chances.

also, as I have recently read, the goat site is allegedly gone, therefore he has to be hosting the images somewhere, perhaps copying the link for the imaged before deleting it next time will help?

This is the updated message to all those 'banned':

This IP address ([my IP]) has been banned from NationStates. One of Clear.net.nz's users has been persistently spamming NationStates with pornography and other offensive material. Clear.net.nz has told us they are investigating the matter, but have not yet identified the user responsible. Your ISP (Paradise or Clear.net.nz) routes your internet traffic through the same IP address as the attacker, so we cannot block him/her without blocking you, too. Unfortunately, until Clear.net.nz takes action against the person responsible, we have no choice by to deny service to all Clear.net.nz customers, including Paradise clients. Since we put this ban in place, the attacker has logged in from Kavanagh College, a Catholic school in Dunedin, and spammed us with pornography again. We have contated the Principal of Kavanagh, and he is investigating. We have repeatedly urged Clear.net.nz to take action against their user as soon as possible, so we can lift the ban on people like you. If you would like to help speed this process along, please contact them. They have been much slower to react than we would like. Why can't the admins just block access from Kavanagh? It would cause less convenience for those affected.

Things are happening, slowly but surely, in this case. Obviously it's easy to say "block access from the following location", but where the location is a school then there are issues to be resolved there which are unique to schools.
The upshot is that the admin doesn't want stacks of people banned, and neither do the stacks of people. Things will be resolved soon - we hope.

We block them as we find them, but there's a lot of mirrors.

A general principle that everyone might want to bear in mind about this situation is based on the old saying "come up with an idiot-proof plan and nature goes and creates a better idiot". In this case it's more like "come up with a way of preventing offensive behaviour and the offensive people get around it", which isn't as catchy, I must admit.
Hopefully, something reasonably foolproof is going to come about in terms of the IP shortly.
