Actually, I'm not - but I am (U)old(/u), and I only faced my first pc in 2002 & am completely self-taught, so I reckon you ought to indulge me a little if I'm about to break every rule in the book ...

I've read as many stickies as RL demands on my time, and the vagaries of the NS server will allow; there are still questions I want to check out the answers to, and I (U)think(/U) that the Tech forum is the right place now I've read the "Read here first or turn into a custard pie" stickie ...

(1) Is there a way to search for TEXT rather than AUTHOR? I followed the link in the stickie to see if there was a site search engine and I was really hacked off to find it wouldn't work unless I wanted to find someone rather than something. e.g I could have typed in "definitions" and hoped it'd lead to an answer for Q2

(2) Where, if anywhere, can I find a list of translations for abbreviations? Some like RL or RP were relatively easy to work out, but others - eg DEAT - I can't understand either by context or by asking google or Matisse's Glossary of Internet Terms. If there ain't an "Idiots' Guide To" type of list, please could someone do one?

I expect I've forgotten lots I meant to ask, but may as well find out first if I chose right in using the Tech forum in the first place ... :?

There used to be, but it's gone for now due to it bening such a laborious task for the server.

Well DEAT is a rather bizzare term, read it as Delete. Any others?

DEAT was a typo for DEAD, and has stuck.

NS = NationStates

OOC = Out-of-Character

IC = In Character

There's a glossary of all these somewhere... I'll look it up for you.

[EDIT]
Found it!

It also looks like you need to brush up on your BBCode formatting.

After not looking at thet for several months, I noticed that Sirocco left out a lot, primarily In-Game terms, and those related to nation stats.

I sent him a telegram with the plugs to some of those gaps.

Thanks - you are all ace. (Would have replied before but the server kept eating my posts & I gave up temporarily)

The BBCode thing - I'm very much afraid that this question is going to be a source of huge amusement, like the Help Desk story about not finding the "any" key, but what the heck, I can take making a total ass of myself .. yes I can .. I think .. anyway, I don't seem to have the square brackets that the help page shows so I just used the ( shaped ones. The only other brackets on my keyboard are squiggly ones { So what can I do to make them act like the BBCode square ones???????

Thanks.

Hmm, on a standard QWERTY keyboard the square brackets are on the same keys as the squiggly ones.

Failing that (a scary thought :shock:), you could use the Character map, which can be accessed by going to Programs>Accessories>Character Map in the start menu, or going to Run and typing "charmap" (assuming you use MSWindows second one might only work in newer versions, I never tryed it in 98).

Edit: fixed the awful smiley, I guess this is not so useful now, but the charmap is still fun to play with :D

Yeah!!!!

My Hero!!!!

They'd been rubbed very faint ... someone must have used 'em a lot (my pc was made from spare parts by a friend, and the other stuff's a mix of new & second .. third .... tenth hand) so now I can try again ... you are a gold star person
