Forum re-sync?

Just out of curiosity, when was the last time this forum had a full re-sync?

A large forum like this would most likely need one every month or so, to stop the database from growing into a tangled monstrosity.

I asked about this once....IIRC, [violet] said that the forum was so messed up that even a re-sync wouldn't do it much good.

Well, the server move might be a good time to do it. After the database has been transferred, a re-sync could be performed which might untangle the mess a bit.

Once we get on the Jolt Servers, I would gladly volunteer to resync this server, with a Peen Ball hammer that is.

Any words of wisdom on this, Sal?

Not really.

And the great one, keeper of the sacred instruction manual, master of the server, lord of mods, speaks!

HEIL!

Seriously, though... is there anything that could be done to fix this?

I expect that when we move to Jolt, this will all be fixed.

So there are going to be some upgrades to the software, not just the server?
I would have thought that the software would need sorting out, not just the hardware. It would be like running Windows ME on a Cray supercomputer otherwise :P

The game software will be left mostly unmodified, the forums will be completely new (though the posts will remain).

why not do the smart thing and let Avaya be your server host?

We do re-sync fairly often (once or twice a month), but it doesn't solve most of our issues.

Why?

I'm posting on the megadeth vBulletin forums right now and I don't have any major problems with it :?

There are more than enough problems with vBulletin to warrant severe dislike of it.

For a start, it's very, very hard to administrate and moderate. Making a post sticky, for example, is a nightmare, whereas in phpBB you just change a radio box on the first post, in vBulletin you have to navigate through about 6 or 7 pages.

The vB database is a lot bigger, as well, as it includes things like a calendar and more user profile fields in its default install. Even if vBulletin is stripped down to the level of these forums, I can guarentee that it woll make this look positively appealing.

There's a website which lists big forums. Not sure where it is, but the top 100 are almost exclusively phpBB and Invision. vBulletin peters out at about 98 if I recall correctly, and Invision follows not long after. phpBB drops out at about 14, and the biggest registered are all Ikonboard's which haven't changed their software for various reasons.

Coming from someone with a lot of experience with forums, the best bet is to wait for phpBB 2.2 to come out, which is almost a complete ground up rewrite of the software.

Even the CVS versions run faster than the current non-development version (2.0.6). Granted, some say that this is because it's not complete. This is true, but the stuff that's left to add (Friend/Foes lists, a few profile fields, and the new usergroups system) isn't going to affect it much at all.

I'd seriously consider asking Jolt to only move the software over and then convert the forums when the newest version of phpBB is released, and then remove/convert the profiles etc. They'll have to do it anyway, and they'll end up with almost exactly the same results as we have now without almost completely rewriting the vBulletin software, so why not wait and then convert?

I'm not having any trouble using vBulletin in any case, theres a 177 users on the forum I'm on and it works fine.(Granted I'm sure they have incredible servers)

I really have no say in this matter. I've heard that a new version of vBulletin should be coming out soon, and I've also heard that Jolt is waiting for it with baited breath.

This is out of my control.

As long as it works well, I don't see why it matters

True, but you can state the case to [violet], who can in turn poke and prod if s/he wants to.
