Flag Uploads

When uploading a new flag, I am often told that the image I am trying to upload exceeds 6KB, when it is actually under 6KB. The only reason I can think of for this occurance is that the system is based on the mistaken assumption that 6KB is equal to 6000 bytes, when in fact, 6KB is equal to 6144 bytes due to the fact that 1KB = 1024 bytes.

it actually needs to be under 5.5k
as the OS of the server recognizes anything from 5.5 up as 6k

hope that helps you.

Why is this? Isn't this a bug that [violet]eeds to fix?

its just the way the servers software operates, I have no real problem wihth it as you can see what I can do with 5.5, although I really wish it would be increased to say 12k for nations with a billion or 2 billion in pop.

12k is pretty big for a flag.

not really. even multiplied a couple thousand times it is no bigger than any normal person's mp3 collection. surely their server can handle that. 40GB of memory.

Bear in mind the suggestion for 12k limit would be for huge populations of a billion or two billion only. kinda a second perk for even older nations.

Not really. It doesn't mean you have to use a larger flag than loop does. You could reach 12k by having a smaller, but more complex flag.

I use 300x200 as it is easier on the eyes and all since it is larger, especially for thos old folk out there like me with bad eyes,
Imagine how clear my current flag would look at 12k?

I really don't see anything wrong with this suggestion. Let's get Salusa Secondus in here to see if we have a genuine good idea. Let's promote this like we did the 500 million name change.

What shall the perk limit be? 1 billion? 2 billion?

This is a genuine good idea. 8)

A little math if you think about it, ~130k nations, say 40% have custom flags, >5.5k a flag (assume the average is about 4.7k) you have 122000*.4*5.5 = ~268 Megs (not a lot at all). Adding an extra 12k for nations over 1Billion, I'd guess that's about 15% of the population (based on some quick checking in the memberlist (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/memberlist.php?mode=joined&order=ASC&start=18000)), then you'll probably add 18000*.4*5.5 (assuming an older nation is as likely to update their flag as a newer nation is to get one) = ~39 extra megs ... so I don't thinks size is to much of an issue.

I like the idea as well, but I don't think that they are changing anything major in NS at the moment.

In antoher thread where I mentioned it I think Sal said he liked it and was going to broach it to the other mods and violet.
I suggest a billion to 1.5 b, as that is a good range.

Yay, I'll probably be there by the time it's implemented (if it is). And for my math, I'd say reduce that to about 10% if it's upped to 1.5B

I think Sal said the flag directory is about 300-400MB...
Just remember that this game will soon be moving to Jolt's servers, meaning that Max may lose control of how large he can let the game directories get.
OH, and as for the 6kb thing, I believe this is because the server uses a Unix filesystem, you're mostly all using FAT32 and NTFS filesystems.

One way of thinking is to work out where you (as a person, not a national leader) are from historically and then go to http://allstates-flag.com/fotw/flags/search.html to get some ideas about what flags your "home" city has etc.
To use myself as an example, I'm ethnically Bavarian and Prussian, so I'm pulling up some coats-of-arms and so on from both regions and then trying to work out what might look good. Chances are that I'd get onto Loop after that.

I thought Hein was that general who wanted to fire the big space gun to kill the phantoms and save earth before DR Aki found out how to kill them.
