Server Problem....

15-02-2004, 23:59
Sorry to bring up a sticky subject. But being a fellow IT pro, I have to say something. When a web server crashes as much as the server that hosts this forum, it is a sign for a upgrade. Even with a t1 the server crashes around 50% of the time. Now if money is the issue, I back off immediatly, but if not I would sudgest looking into purchacing a better server for this wonderful part of the NS game. Thanks

NationStates will shortly be moving to a far, far better server,

Jolt hosting is the new server and will run both NS I and NS II in the future. This can be read about on various threads throughout the forums.

From what I understand, the hardware isn't necessarily the problem. At least part of it goes to the flat-file design of the original databases, and the limitations of the phpBB software.

But yeah, the move should help. Sal, is anybody talking about upgrading the database engines behind either the game or the forums at this point?

The file structure for NS won't be changing, and the forum is already running on the latest version of MySQL.

Well, while you can't exactly speak for us Myrth, you are correct on at least the first count, and I'm pretty sure that you're right on the second.

The real problem is buffering and disk access. Hopefully Jolt's server will be powerful enough to handle the game, but there are no backend code changes even on the drawing board yet.

It's not new to me. I get them infrequently, but they still happen.

I see three possible answers:
1. I get through to one of the MySQL open connections. I'm in.
2. I get through to the server, but it's overloaded and bounces my request. (this issue)
3. The server is so overloaded it doesn't even see me. Page not found, etc.
