How can you tell when the update is finished?

Is there a definative signal that the major and/or minor update has completed?

I tried watching the UN page to see when new Regional Delegates were promoted, and also when proposals failed to meet quorum. In spite of waiting for these two events to complete, I still somehow managed to slip in my proposal before the update was finished.

Sal, I know you closed this topic (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=121917) as a moderation issue, but the moderators passed it back as a technical issue, related to the update. I'm not protesting about the loss of my proposal, I just want to get it right the next time I try.

I think the best sign the major update is over is that the new UN Rankings are shown. It probably has a couple more things to do after the old proposals in the queue are dumped and it was still doing them when you submitted your proposal.

What exactly are you calling the UN rankings, Naleth? Would that be "The Largest Soda Pop Sector in the World", etc.? Would it be when the title changes, the sort order changes in my region, the top 10 sort order in the world changes? There are too many choices.

There are over 13,000 regions in the game now, and I would imagine that it takes a fair amount of time to generate these tables, unless PHP does it on the fly (a possibility). I'm really looking for a clue as to the LAST thing it does, so I guess I better wait for Sal.

One more thought. Cogitation said (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=121908):
UN proposals are auto-deleted every 12 hours, at both the daily minor and daily major updates.
Is that true? I've not seen any evidence that suggests proposals are changed more than once per day. My proposal stayed on page 18 for 24 hours, page 14 for the next 24, and page 8 for its final day. Given that I was asleep from 2am to 8am server time, I could have missed a second update, but I thought the minor happened in the US afternoon.

I'd appreciate a clarification.

Yes, the "Largest whatever in the world/region" is the UN ranking.

True it probably does take a long time for all that to happen. In fact I would guess that it does those things as it updates each region. however, the new stats are not published as it goes from region to region. As far as I can tell, it doesn't show the new rankings untill it's done with the update (or change the title or anything). It could be like the resolution throw out, where it happens before the update is actually over, but that's my best guess.

In any event, all the changes involving the rankings happen simultaneously some time very near the end of the update.

It seems to me that Once I get my new issue, it is pretty much over with. I live in a "Z" region though, so that may have some effect.

I believe that the entire ranking is replaced at once. Also, it is done last.

That only gives the ending for the morning update though.

Those of us in the States are usually not up for the main update.

What's the defining end of the evening update?

Sorry, there is no good way for the minor update.

Much obliged, Sal.

The UN Rankigns report is recorded as each individual nation/region updates, but is not "published" until the end of the daily major update, and is published all at once. That usually happens somewhere around 8am eastern time.

...unless PHP does it on the fly (a possibility).

/me chuckles.

Yeah, it used to do it on-the-fly. Then, the first 50,000 nations showed up and swamped the server.

/me continues chuckling.
