#nationstates_technical IRC channel created

It started as a way to get the geek out of #nationstates_general - but using it as an extension of this forum seems logical and sensible, especially when this forum is suffering the Bandwidth Blues as it frequently does.
Current ops are me as CrystalDragon, Tactical Grace and The Basenji as Bas. To make it work though, we really need some more ops from various time-zones, who are preferably tech mods from here, as well as the blessings of the forum.
So consider this a recruitment advertisement, and by all means telegram me or reply here if you're a mod or other techically-minded person who is interested in opship.
Bear in mind that if there's a lot of replies, we won't be able to take everyone on. So please don't be disappointed if you don't get in. Just give it your best shot and help us create another successful extension to the Nationstates website!
Hmm ... "IRC" eh?*
Maybe I'll look into it tommorrow.
* Yes, I do I know what IRC is, I just don't use it much.

I can't use it. My father won't open a port but he'll show me how to move things outside the firewall.
Someday.
Maybe even by the end of the millenia, though I don't have my hopes up
What is an op anywhen?

Bizarre. :? The firewall I'm behind allows me to get through, and I didn't have to open any ports to do it. Have you tried yet? I can guide you through the steps...it's pretty easy.
And an op is like a mod. Channel Operators (Ops) can kick people from the channel, ban people, mute people...etc.

Qaaolchoura might have a NAT router/firewall - Network Address Translation. Or s/he might be behind a proxy, with X computers all sharing the same IP address. Or, horror of all horrors, s/he might have a real firewall, instead of ZoneAlarm or Black ICE.
In the case of NAT or a hardware (real) firewall, you need to open ports in order for it to work. In the case of a proxy, you need to set up one or more mapped links going from the LAN side of the proxy to whatever the destination is (say, legend.esper.net:6667).
I'm not sure how the catch-all irc.esper.net and bots.esper.net URLs will work behind NAT, or whether they'll work. In this case, www.esper.net has a list of all the Espernet servers, their location, and whether they accept robots or not. Choose one (or more), and make links to them, and you should be OK to go.
Hope that helps.

My father said that it is not a proxy, yet it matches your description of a proxy. It's a router of some sort for our wireless LAN (four computers), don't know if it is a NAT, since I do not know what "NAT" stands for.

My father is a professional computer programmer, and he and at least half a dozen computer programmers were working on an online boardgame site this summer, and could not figure out any way of opening ports.

Since I know virtually nothing about IRC I don't really get it. How would I chose a server.
Hope that helps.

Thanks, but even Peng-Pau eventually gave up on me, so I think that I'll just have to wait for my father to show me how to move things into the DMZ.

If it's a seperate little box that isn't a computer, and all your machines connect to it, it's very likely a NAT router. This means it's possible to get IRC to work through it, but it's going to be a major pain in the ass. The good thing is, once it's set up, it doesn't have to be set up again. Yeah, I'd wait for your dad if I was you. He should know how to figure things out.
If he's already tried and failed, ask him if he's tried opening the "ident" port. This is what some servers use to identify clients on the network, and it can cause problems if you don't have this port open.
For your dad's information: mIRC and other IRC clients usually act as an ident server. See RFC1459 (http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/text/rfc1459.txt) and RFC2812 (http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/rfc/rfc2812.txt) for more information. This should provide everything anyone would ever want to know, and more besides, about IRC.
IRC works just fine through my D-Link NAT router, and it didn't need to open any ports for it to work...

I think that I have it working now. I wonder why Peng-Pau said that I needed to open the ports.
Now I just need to figure out how to join. . .
Edit: Gahh. Every time that I connnect to the server my LAN disconnnects, every time that I reconnect the LAN the connection remains on the server until I try to connect to the channel, whereapon the server promptly disconnects. :x  :tantrum:

The scary thing is I don't remember saying anything about opening ports, but I have found the post where I did... :?
Must have been in the middle of the night when I was reeeally tired...
On one network i sit behing a MS proxy server and the other i sit behing 2 hardware firewalls and routers...
all works fine for me...
