Anyone know what happened to the idea of a small annual fee for being here to help pay to enhance the server? I'd be happy to pay up to £5 per year (about $8, American) and be subject to the same rules and regulations. My guess is that the overwhelming majority would pay up gladly too. It would also help keep away stupid 'serial spammers'.

Per player or per nation?

I don't like this idea - NS1 is supposed to be free and should be as such.

Yes it's free.....and slow. £1 to £5 a year is not a lot for 365/24 access and a faster server. Less then 5p a week for all this luverly entertainment.
P.S. Per player.

I still think the voluntary donation thing is the best idea. I'd be happy to donate £10 if it would help get us a better server.
I'd even donate if it went straight into Max's pocket. It costs him $400 a month to keep us here... I think we owe him.

why 400? And I think that pay for play should be for NS2, which I would still join. But, for here, it would deter tens of thousands...

$400 for the bandwidth it costs to give us the game.

I'm very opposed to this idea. This site was made to promote his books. I fail to see how making people pay for this would help his case.

and it must be working, otherwise he wouldn't pay 400 to keep it up

Max probably gets a little over $1 for every book sold... so that means NS has to get 400 sales a month for the costs to be covered. It sounds about right I suppose.
Besides, another reason he keeps us here is probably because it advertises NS2 as well...

With any luck, I believe our server issues will be largely solved soon.

Would you rather I said "Tough luck, it's gonna suck until we delete 80,000 nations"?

Hey! Don'k kick the messenger (although I like to do that too)! Definately not when the news are good.

I think that the idea of complusory pay fees for NS1 is wrong and should not occur. Voluntary donations are perfectly fine, but this is meant to be a free site and paying any amount is wrong (if it is compulsory).

Nation States should be free because some people cannot afford to send $5 a month to play~ :( :x

Okay, why don't we try that. I don't mind being a minority that helps to improve the site for others that prefer not to contribute. Is there any technical reason this couldn't be done?

I don't know of any, there are plenty of internet based donation services (like paypal), and there are other ways to donate money besides that. I'm pretty sure the only reason is because Max doesn't want to take donations.

Any mods with a view? Do you know if Max would consider the idea?

This is very very unlikely. The purpose this site was founded was to advertise Max´s book(s). If you want to donate, buy his book. That´s the closest you can get.

It was posted a while ago that Max doesn't want to take donations unless he can be sure they'll go to making the game more reliable - which he's not sure he can do.

Just as long as they aren't 80,000 of my puppets. :P
I only really have somewhere between 200 and 300 puppets when they are all alive in reality, but I may reach 80,000 yet

If you want to help the site, buy books.

Also, make sure they are books by Max.

As an aside, Max could well start a book club, and get a % off of the books he recomends-- could be profitable for both.
