Nations Names

12-01-2004, 23:40
I wish to lodge a complaint.

Im sick of not being able to Register a nation name then running a search on that name and finding the nation doesnt exist.
I assume this is because they no longer exist but did before

Why bother keeping a name reserved on the slim chance they want the name back at some point in the future? When someone new could be using it right now?

1. Once a nation name has been used, it cannot be used again. The nation is stil technically out there, you just can't see it.

2. We have been told that a more effective upgrade to the forum is on its way. Hopefully this will solve most of the problems.

How about you put your money where your mouth is and send him some cash? I take it you do have copies of both books already, yes?

1. Once a nation name has been used, it cannot be used again. The nation is still technically out there, you just can't see it.

This explains why the situation exists: It's because of a stupid rule.

It does not at all justify why we should keep putting up with a stupid rule which has no justification, no reason for being.

I someone has left his nation for months, let it be dead and gone.

I'd think it would get to be an actuarial problem after a while.

There are plenty of reasons for that rule, and they have been discussed at great length in many previous threads in this forum. For one, nations come back after many months gone. For another, nations are often famous/infamous, and that would be inherited with a new nation.

Qaa, I think this ought to be added to the FAQ, if it's not there already

Hmmm, is there a technical reason for this? Supposedly a Nation is deleted at most after 60 days of inactivity, if not 28.

Deleted suggests "gone": why is the name still unavailable, in OOC/G terms?

This name-not-available-yet-not-in-use business arose with my very first Nation, and I have had to accept a lesser substitute. (True, there are worse things in life, and can you imagine if it were the same with domain names?!!!)

ALSO:

Is there any possibility of having my Nation's name changed? Only after I had started playing and found out about regions did I realize that my Nation name is more appropriate as a Region name (this should be obvious).

love the game, the pace, the scope, the way low micro-management is implemented and, so far, the forum (lucky me I guess, haven't had any trouble with it yet)

well... it's a pitty that all those names are lost and gone forever.
i heard these complaints many times.
maybe names should become free again half a year after the nation died.
or maybe let it depend on the population. the bigger the nation, the longer it is guarded in the limbo. to prevent that players who have put a big effort in there nation to end up with starting all over again.
in this way we would end the hobby of some players to pick a lot of good names just to pick those good names.

Interesting one. Allow me to play Devil's Advocate...

Isn't part of the fun of the game coming up with a name that no-one else has? Shouldn't there be some imagination involved in the game? Afterall, if you play the game with the intention of getting a repution as a dictator/liberal leader/communist/psycho then you want to do so on your own terms, not on the terms of someone who got there 6 months before you.

But I'm new to this, so I could be wrong!

Let's say there is a really great player whose nation name is "Fatso". He helps out, is an awesome RPer, and everyone loves him. He is truly a role model.

However, due to real life, he has to leave NationStates and his nation dies.

Now, a few months later, a n00b joins NS. Because nation names can be reused, the n00b unknowingly takes up the name of our role model, "Fatso". The n00b spams up the forums, messes up RP, and screws the game up until he's deleted.

Now everyone thinks the role model came back, but messed everything up, forever tarnishing his reputation.

The real player of "Fatso" rejoins NS with his name. He is rather confused why everyone hates him all of the sudden...

I'm opposed to this idea for just this reason.

Bas has a really good point. If some fewl comes and kills someone's popularity, it isn't very fun for the person that comes back who originally owned the name.

However, I also am kind of irked with the names not vanishing. Because I wanted to make another one.. and both the names were used (both of them being dead as well).

I mean, it sucks for someone who wants to use a name that was already taken, but it's not the end of the world. Instead of using a name that could be pretty popular, I came up with a ridiculous one. So it works out eventually, if you're brain can think of something uber silly.

Maybe if you want to make a name of a nation that was already taken, why not just alter a few letters? Or just add things to it...hmm

Anyway, that's my $0.02
