Nation links don't stay.........HELP

On both computers I use the links to nations seem to be refreshed to new status when I exit the page I'm on. Is this a new update or am I having an isolated problem? Any ideas on how to fix it?

i have it too, it's annoying.

I'm not having this happen, but this might be a side effect of some changes made to help prevent pages from being cached, which was causing many problems for many users (such AOL . . . . grrr)

If it helps people I can live with it.

Yeah, I have it too, annoying, but liveable.

Perhaps I'm not fully understanding what you mean. What exactly are you describing?

This is extremely annoying and not livable for me.

With the new numbers in the links, Sal, that is http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/XXXXX/page=display_nation/nation=unfree_people, they change. If you log in, you get a set of links like http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/11111/page=display_nation/nation=unfree_people, but if you log out and log back in again, you get something entirely different, http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/99999/page=display_nation/nation=unfree_people.

This is very bad because, when mass telegramming (endorsement trading in the case of Kurd, recruitment for my region in my case), we have no way to tell if we've clicked on a nation and sent them a telegram before. This will undoubtedly result in a nation getting more than one telegram eventually.

I can think of several other ways in which this is simply. Not. Cool.

Please, please, please consider changing this!

If you have other suggestions, we are listening, but we've probably tried most of them already.

May I recommend using your favorite text editor (or database if you really want) to keep track of who you've contacted?

I am doing that now, but it creates a lot more work on my part and I'm just not happy with this.

I don't understand what was wrong with the old system, though.

There are many players who are behind caching proxies. These proxies will only reload a page occasionally, and thus, will serve an old version of a page to players. This results in updates not being seen, TG's not being received, seeing pages from other nations you control, etc. By changing the URLs we force the proxies to reload the pages.

Was this what was causing the recent slowdown in the server?

What you're telling us, is that from hence forth every nation that is a delegate or has intentions of becoming a delegate must keep track of every single endorsement?

This would result in more telegrams being sent by mistake to the same person. More telegrams being sent equals less bandwidth that the server will have for other tasks. The people getting the telegrams would respond in kind by complaining to you all thus you would have even more work to do on top of what you have.

This in itself could slow the server down.

Is there something else that could be tried? This gives the delegates of all regions a lot more work to do with something that was up until this point a simple process.

Another solution that might be done with this or alone is that when endorsing nations I have noticed that a good number of old endorsements on delegates are from nations that have been inactive for over 20-60 days.

Is this a glitch? I thought that nations even when on vacation mode could only be inactive so long before they're deleted. If this were to be changed it should improve the load times of this site, though it would require a lot of work on the part of a few mods if not all of them.

Maybe a limit could be set on nations not on vacation to 21 days and for nations on vacation 45 days. This would clear up to much wasted space it should more than solve the recent problem.

What have you all tried?

This update has nothing what so ever to do with endorsements, thus I'm afraid that I cannot follow your logic in this part of the message.

He means what I said, this will just create a lot more work for endorsement traders and recruiters. I am starting to keep a log, but it's problematical.

All this means, is that everytime you login, all links will be listed as unvisited. While you remain logged in, the links will act as before.

All right, thanks Salusa, I do realize that.

All I was asking was for it to be put back the way it was before, if this is impossible/impractical I understand and will leave the issue be.

Here is the problem. Let's say I am the delegate of a region with over 1000 UN nations, which about 85% endorsing me.

I typically go through the list of all nations every 2 days to stay up-to-date on new nations.

The way the old system was I would see all the nations I've already telegrammed highlighted thus I would not telegram them.

With the new system I would first have to click on every nation that has endorsed me. That's 850 clicks. Then I would have to go through the list of nations page and click on every other nation. Let's say my region has on average 20 new UN nations every 2 days (it's very active), then instead of just clicking on those 20 I would have to click on 270.

This will be a problem for every Pacific delegate and those within large regions. I understand if you can't change it back, but realize that if you don't it will be a big inconvience to them.

Of course, I am not telegramming this out of the goodness of my heart. I am running against Norion in the West Pacific. I do not have the time to make the additional couple hundred clicks every few days to stay up-to-date on endorsements. In fact I never finished endorsing in the first place. Norion himself would have to put in a lot more time on endorsing new nations., thus this new system would make a problem for everyone who was or wanted to run a large region.

With what we have seen recently in the SP this would not be a bad thing if it stayed the same, but it makes a lot more work for everyone who is running a large region or wants to try.

Thanks for the time you have put into answering my questions.

is this the reason i cannot move between regions via the "move to another region" thing? when i typed the region in the box, ans press search i'll always end up seeing my own nation...

(it's still possible when clicking "move to REGION today", and via "the world"

I have that happen sometimes when clicking on nations. Instead of seeing that nation I see my own.

It's appears to me that it is just a random glitch. Try refreshing NS and doing it again. You could always clean out your cookies and such. If none of that works try using another computer.
