"This Page can not be displayed?!?" Q and A thread

Congratulations! You've gotten the "This Page Can Not Be Displayed" error! But what does it mean? This thread will *hopefully* answer your questions about it before you start a topic in here about it.

Q: What does "This Page can not be displayed" mean and why do I get it so much?

A: This is the server being over loaded and crashing. The server, as it may surprise you, is pretty good. Pretty good at doing what it was supposed to do, that is. You see, the server is only made to host the forums, not the whole nation aspect of the game. Sometimes (At it's peak level), it'll simply give up and crash.

Q: Is it just my computer, or does everyone have to deal with it?

A: Everyone has to suffer. When you can't get the forums, everyone else can't get the forums.

Q: Can you fix it?

A: Good news! :D The server problems will be fixed as soon as we move over to Jolt (www.jolt.co.uk)! Read on for more details that were released in the Max Barry interview-

<Melkor> ok heres another one
<Scolopendra> From Goobergunchia: "What are the upcoming plans for improving the forums?
<MaxBarry> lol
<MaxBarry> A very good question. :)
<MaxBarry> The funny thing with the forums is that I really just stuck it on the game as an afterthought
<MaxBarry> I thought, "I guess people might want to talk about their nations, so I'll add a bulletin board"
<MaxBarry> And they've been so popular that, well, they've really struggled in terms of reliability
<MaxBarry> Despite everything we've tried to do to keep them responsive, they've been getting worse and worse
<MaxBarry> However, I have some good news on this front :)
<MaxBarry> For the last few months I've been talking to a British gaming company called Jolt
<MaxBarry> www.jolt.co.uk
<TheSLAGLands> [/shamelessplug]
<MaxBarry> At first about creating a sequel game, NationStates 2, but then also about this game
<MaxBarry> Jolt run a variety of online games at the moment, and have the kind of juicy hardware and bandwidth that we need
<MaxBarry> We've come to an agreement whereby they'll code up and manage NationStates 2, based on my plan for it
<MaxBarry> And they'll also take on hosting of NationStates 1
<MaxBarry> I.e. this game :)
<MaxBarry> This means that while NationStates will remain essentially the same, it will have professional level hosting
<MaxBarry> and WORKING FORUMS
* Menelmacar|Siri yays!
* Reploid_Productions cheers
<Neutered_Sputniks> Told ya guys it was comin :P
<MaxBarry> which will be a relief to most of you as much as it is to me
* DreadLadyNathicana cheers loudly!
<MaxBarry> Jolt and I are in the process of getting ready for moving the game across right now
<[violet]> And of course, when we make the move, the site will be down for a few days to make sure we move everyone's nations properly
* Scolopendra holds up the "APPLAUSE" sign.
* Menelmacar|Siri applauds.
* Treznor applauds wildly!
<Karmabaijan> OK! Thanks for the question Goober, some big news on the forums front!
<[dredd]> Finally.
* MaxBarry snickers.
<TheSLAGLands> Oh, and if I may supplement here, Max...
<TheSLAGLands> Will the Jolt initiative cost money for the players of NationStates 1?
<MaxBarry> No, it's the same game, same setup, just on a different host
<Pergutoria> yay
* Melkor yays

Q: Why not start a donation service to take money and buy a better server?

A: This can be best explained by Sal-

We know about the level of interest, and this idea has gone all of the way up the ladder to Max, himself. He decided not to do this now, because he won't accept donations unless he can guarantee that they will go directly towards improving the server (and be successful in that), and he is unable to guarantee that at the moment.

Basically, he knows that you want to donate money, but he won't accept it until he is positive that it will go directly to (and be successful at) what it is intended for.

Hopefully this will reduce the amount of questions about this. If I left anything out, please tell me. I'd also like a sticky request on this.

Now it's all coming back to me.

First off, I should explain: you, who are reading this: You are the only nation on here not controlled by me.

But how do I get way with having however many 1,000 UN nations?

Simple: IAMB, IAV, IAD, IASS

Also being the all of the Game Moderators, I pass myself up in the scans, except every now and then when I get bored, and zap a couple of my multis. I ddn't actually IP my puppets such as Marathon, America inc, and JARROS but rather hid them and pretended to. They still exist hidden from the public eye.

Way back in November 2002, I hit my head on a rock, and formed several personalities. This kept up several times, with me forgetting the others, and running them subconsciosly . . . until now.

No I rememebr, and realize that you are the only IP on NS not belonging to me. Soon, grasshopper, you too

Back on topic.

That would be great (No it's not a new idea), but we can't. The cost of running two servers and supplying them with broadband would break poor Mr. Barry. Servers don't come cheap... :(
14-01-2004, 16:08
Well?

To explain what Sal said-

Max Barry doesn't want to start a donation system until he is sure that the donations can go into buying a new server and/or better bandwidth. Basically, he wants to put the money to use, not have it sit there and do nothing. If you want to give Mr. Barry money, go out and buy both his books. That is the only way we can give him money...for now.

Edit- Added something to the paragraph
14-01-2004, 16:52
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but

1. There will be no donations if it isn't 100% sure that it improves the server.

2. Two servers would do good but costs.

Is there an uncertainty to #2 or where is the problem? Hypotethically speaking, that is.

Could you restate what your asking in a diffrent way, please? It's still early here, and I'm half asleep. :oops: Thanks, and sorry.

Have a cup of coffee and read the last posts one more time! :wink:

Donations: Only if it is guaranteed to improve the server.
Two servers => improvement and costs

The next logical step here, would be to collect donations and put another server to work. If there is enough interest that is.

I would say that there is probably enough interest, from the members of this site, for a substantial amount of money to come through.
The Basenji

*Runs off for some coffee*

Ah, I get it now. :lol:

You see, the problem is that Max doesn't want to take our money unless he knows for a solid fact that the money can be used for improving the server or buying a new one.

Let's say he opens an account that accepts donations. Then let's say only a few people give a $10 each. This money can't be used for anything, so now Mr. Barry has some money that he can't do anything with.

Basically (If something like that happens), he didn't hold up to his word. He said that the servers would improve if he got donations. He got donations. But he couldn't improve the servers.

I do see your point though. If 100 people donated $5 each, that's $500. Surely something could be done with that. I'll present this to the admins through email, and give a bunch of points as to why a donation service would be good.
14-01-2004, 17:31
Yeah, well, I know that it is easy for me, sitting here saying "Hey, buy a new server.", but should it work to have two separate servers working at the same time, it might be worth some consideration.

*watching the clock*

It's 17.30 now CET (GMT+1) and I have about 1.5 - 2 hours to visit the fora. After 19.00 CET (when america wakes up and gets online) it is almost impossible for me to do so until the next day.

o.O

The forum and game are on the same server? Why is then that I've almost never had issues with the game but the forum almost never works for me? If they're on the same server would not there be the same problems?

Both the forum and game are php frontend on a mysql backend right? If they're on the same server why would one work and the other not?

It's a crayx world :(

That isn't a safe assumption. The forums are a PHP frontend to a mySQL backend. The game is a Perl though and through. It doesn't even use a database but uses a flat file system to store the data. The bottle neck is the mySQL DB.

Just a quick question. I know that if the server is down, everyone is experiencing the same thing.

However, it appears that I am getting the "This Page Cannot Be Displayed" page more often than not anymore. Almost every single time I first go to get onto the forum, I get the page and it takes me a good amount of time to actually get on, that does not include getting onto a thread and making a post.

I was just wandering if some computers are more prone to getting "THE PAGE" then others. Everyone else seems to be getting on just fine, but almost every single time I go to get on, I cannot.

I know this may just be my paranoia, but I was wondering.
Frisbeeteria
22-01-2004, 04:41
I have an unrelated question, I think.

It seems I have the hardest time getting to the UN, Gameplay and Moderation forums. Even at the worst periods of serverload, I don't find it especially difficult to get into NationStates, and General is only moderately tougher.

I've tried it with several browser windows open, and I can get into NS nad II relatively easily, but UN times out again and again. I've observed this in both IE and Opera, on entirely different networks, and can't think of a single reason why a mySQL backend would favor one forum request over another ... unless it was somehow designed to do so.

Anybody else having this experience? Any explanation from above?
