07-01-2004, 15:49
I've rated the nations in real life according to the "Graphical UN Category" mapping. I used worldaudit.org to judge the relative freedoms:

Here's a list for example of all the Psychotic Dictatorships: (Is this a fair rating?). I have all the others on a spreadsheet but will make this post short and see if anyone has interest in rating the nations in real life. (IRL)

Psychotic Dictatorships:
Belarus
China
Cuba
Haiti
Iran
Iraq
Kazakhstan
Korea,North
Laos
Libya
Myanmar

Yes? Holland is a very liberal country after all. Moreso that the UK anyway. We've got a monarchy.

Holland is not a country, it's a province

US would be a corporate police state.

China and Belarus are Corrupt Dictatorships.

Corporate police state?: Try Afghanistan. (the only one that fit)
Corrupt Dictatorship?: Try Chad (it was the only one)

The US has high economic freedoms, true. But to be a police state, it has to have relatively low civil rights and low political rights. Neither of which are relatively true according to worldaudit based on many objective factors. (not to say the US hasn't gained in corruption lately...you could check that interesting tidbit out) Perhaps you are making a political exaggeration for a kind of "worthy" cause. (ie: war protest)

Iraq would probably be classed as a Father Knows Best State or Iron Fist Consumerists since the war - the Americans keep political low for now, economic is definitely in the lower middle range (the reason folks can't buy stuff or do business well is poverty and damage, not a lack of permission) and civil is somewhere between low and medium, I'd have to be there to know how much the chasing for Baath members still affects the common Iraqi.

Hopefully, by end of this year, they'll make it to Inoffensive Centrist Democracy 8)

Hrm. The US would probably be a New York Times democracy and China would be a corporate police state.

The US is pretty centrist compared to the rest of the world and has high political and civil rights compared to the rest of the world. China has low political freedoms and civil rights, and is very, very, capitalist now.

China still has a centrally planned economy. Freedom is only given in certain markets.

Brazil
Jamaica
Lesotho
Mali
Namibia
Peru
Phillipines
Senegal

I wonder if being equatorial is a trend here...

Singapore by the way is a Capitalist Paradise. (Kuwait/Armenia and a couple of others are too)

Bolivia, El Salvador, Israel and Thailand are Corporate Bordellos. (high poli/econ, med civil)

Have to keep in mind that these ratings are relative to the world based on measurements and not based on ideals. Still interesting.
