Is there any chance details of the algorithm the game uses will be publicized, or is that strictly off-limits to players?
You mean open-source the game? It's been suggested... but I don't see it happening.

It would open the door to imitations and modified versions. I think Max is probably busy enough with his writing to get involved in legal action.

I recall one comment by Reploid in that with the exception of here and a couple others, even the game mods do not have access to the source code.
So I would naturally infer that the answer would be "no".

Yeah... but that's just html you got from view source. Anyone can view that, but this is the code that runs the game and forums, plus being able to change it.
PHPBB code is open-sourced, so if you want the forums, it's easy. Methinks you'll have a much harder time with the game, though. ;)

It would also mean that admin would have to take security far more seriously, as any holes in the code would be exploited far more quickly
It all sounds so Matrix-like.

This game is based on cgi programs you are not sent these programs, as you are the HTML. these programs are executed and you are sent the results, unless you can somehow hack into the nationstates server, or Max for some unknown reason gives you the code to look at, this is not going to happen

It's Perl I think... Perl makes scripts, C/C++ makes programs... :P

It basically comes down to that CGI is run there and then, it's interpreted, much like you reading a book, and that C/C++ and similar languages are compiled, they're checked and made into one single file which doesn't need another program (an interpreter) to run it.
