Another crazy idea

Is it possible to give the author of a thread the option to lock his/her thread at any time? Like a button they can push to lock it. So that way, the author could close the thread if there is flaming, or if it starts going the wrong way.

Might reduce the workload from the Mods.

(Any one can reply to this, as I know a lot of you guys are really smart with Phpbb technology. But keep all posts on topic.)

I know that InvisionFree allows it, the question is, people might start multiple polls in General, and then lock the unfavorable ones.

Not too major, but one little point that I'll make.
Some people's lives revolve around the polical discussions in NationStates doncha know.

I know there is a feature that allows users to lock their own threads in Invision Boards, but I'm not sure about phpbb2. I certainly don't think you can do it in normal phpbb2. I'll have a poke around and see if you can modify board permissions to enable people to lock their own threads.

As Qaaolchoura said, it does allow for abuse. People could start off a political debate and then immediately lock it, so people on the opposite of the political spectrum don't have a chance to smash it down.

But let's face it, any improvement made can be abused. We just have to hope it's worth it, and that people don't abuse the power.

I've checked through an admin panel, and the only permissions you can set are the ones you can see down in the bottom-right. It might be possible to modify it enough so normal users can create posts, but it would probably be quite a heft overhaul of the forum.

Pesonally, I would be against this, not that it matters much (though I am happy to annouce my deflated 2 cents are back up to being worth .12 cents).

Beyond being abused, most threads are really discussion peices. They shouldn't be aplace to stand on a soapbox, spit out a 2 center or two and lock any debate (forcing a new dbate on a new thread). Beyond littering the board, I don't think it is a good ethos to encourage.

Just my O tho.

Certainly on a politically-charged board as General sometimes is, the last thing I'd want to see would be millions of little threads announcing that GW Bush is good/bad or that <ethnic group> are the scum of the earth. Those threads are bad enough when people can respond to them, but if they were all locked by their creator, it would be a pretty nasty situation.
