"Filtering" websites out?

The Basenji
23-12-2003, 16:51
Is it possible to block out anything posted from a certain site? Say every time someone posted a picture from a goatse or tubgirl site, you could take the site name and add it to the "block" list. Then the next time people tried to post a digesting picture from that website, our server would block it out completely!

Maybe this will help reduce, and maybe even one day completely block out, all tubgirl and goatse on NationStates.

Good idea, bad idea, or do I make no sense at all?

goatze is word-filtered. I'm not sure if this works within [url] tags or not... :?

<Kick> for Sal to see.

Could a kind mod move this into the tech forum since I posted it in the wrong place? Thanks...

Hmm...

goatse <-- with an s
goatze <-- with a z
goatsa <-- with an s
goatza <-- with a z

Aha... That's interesting...

And no, word censoring doesn't work in URL's, it only censors the part of the text which appears in the posts.

So you’re going to try the idea out? If not I'll come up with something else. If I have to see another repulsive picture I might leave the game. :(

Word censoring does work in URLs and IMG tags.

It's very easy to filter out websites, and we do it to several already (including the infamous goatse). If there are others, please suggest them.

It's what they call an MMPORPG or something. The acronym stands (or at least mine does) for "Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game". What happens is that you sign up and you get an "army". You then try to get people to visit your army's page in order to make your "army" "grow", so that you can "fight" the other players. Obviously the player with the biggest army has the inside running.
Around these parts, it's really popular with males aged about 12-14 (upper primary-early high school).

The problem is, as I'm sure you can begin to see, that it turns into a bizarre sort of popularity contest to see who can engineer the most hits on their page and thus the biggest army. A few months ago (before I was a Game Mod, so this is rather ancient history), people were putting the link to their army page in their sigs and spamming all the forums with links etc etc etc. Not much fun to deal with, but eventually the word got banned (the site's name has no hyphen).

Calling it an MMORPG gives a bad name to decent games that are also MMOs ... that term is to broad :P. Basically the only objective is to trick as many people as you can into clicking a link that brings them to your army page (as stated). Not much of an RPG if you ask me .

*there may be other elements to the game, since I've never actually tried it I wouldn't know*

Yeah, we know the trick, but it doesn't help as the URLs and IMGs will still be broken, thus the goal is still accomplished.

However, I might note that Mods highly disapprove of that method to sidestep the word censors in general (don't worry Poco, you're not in trouble) and deal with it harshly. This is because it demonstrates that the person knows that there are rules against it, and purposely side steps them.

What are some other games which are MMOs, Naleth? Are we talking those sorts of PC games with a "persistent atmosphere" (e.g. EverQuest, Battlefield 1942) or is it something else entirely?

Well, you could always point to a site the redirects to Goatse.

Salusa, I disagree.

http://www.fuck.it.com.net.uk

This isn't censored in the hyperlink... Yes, I've added in a load of domain extensions to make sure it's an invalid site...

It censors the links on the preview page, but not the actual post.

Done as below, obviously with the actual words, not with hyphens:

Ultima Online and The Sims Online probably count...

Massively (GAH, GRAMMAR!) Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games are things with a persistant atmosphere, I.E. if you drop something, it stays there until someone picks it up even if you log out, like Project Entropia, EverQuest, DarkSpace, Legends of Saryia (http://www.saryia.com) (shameless plug).

On that note, if anyone here is good with graphics or programming, telegram me, because Saryia's head hunting...

Everquest, UO, and Dark Age of Camelot are probably the most popular, but they have been getting more popular. I don't think BF1942 has a persistent world (but I've never played it .. maybe a persistent world in each server?). Basically the term covers any game that can be played in it's entirety online.

Because it's a newer term (and it sounds nifty), it covers a wiiide variety of games. Nationstates (and a whole lot of other browser-based games) fall into the category because they have persistant worlds and no body wants to think of a new name for them. Personally, I think that since these games are almost entirely different (sharing only the persistent world feature) so they really shouldn't be in the same category. So it's pretty much a complaint on my part about how the term is used in general, not about you using it wrong.
