(Bug Report) Flag Not Uploading

19-12-2003, 05:11
This may have already been covered, and if so, I apologise for wasting your time.

However, it is not the usual cache problem (where the browser shows an old flag instead of a recently uploaded one).

What's happening is that I'm trying to upload a custom flag (.jpg format, 4.1kb), and when I click the "Upload" button, I get the message "The attempt to load "Accessing URL: http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/upload.cgi" failed".

This doesn't appear to be a one-off thing, since it's happened every time I try to upload a flag.

I'm using Internet Explorer 5, running on MacOS 9.1.

Any help would be most appreciated.

I uploaded a flag earlier today without a problem. Could you copy/paste the exact error message here for me to look at?

I'm afraid that is the exact error message; "The attempt to load "Accessing URL: http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/upload.cgi" failed". Without the quotation marks, of course. I took a screenshot to make sure I got it right.

perhaps your flag is too big, I would be happy to look at it, also the JPG tag in the image file may be corrupted, I have seen that happen before,

The only real requirement for a file to be uploaded is that it is less then 6k (server size .. a little over 5.5k). I know i've uploaded a random text file once just to see what would happen. It takes it fine, just shows a broken link.

Looking at the "can't telegram" thread ... could this also be a proxy problem?

The flag is definitely under 6kb, and it's 107x71 pixels, just as it's supposed to be. I've tried uploading a different flag, that I know works, but I get the same error message with that as well.

'Tis odd, 'tis most odd ... does anyone else have this problem?

Do you use a proxy to connect to the internet?

If you don't know what a proxy is, then answer this question instead:
Go to (in Internet Explorer) the "Tools" menu, then choose "Inernet Options..." Switch to the "Connections" tab in the window that pops up and hit the "LAN Settings..." button at the bottom of the window. Now then, is the box next to "Use a proxy server <ect>" checked? (also, the information in the 2 text boxes at the bottom of the LAN settings window will be filled out if you are using a proxy).

If this is the case then this is probably (or if you are connection from a network, such as a school or a bussiness, then this *might*) be a proxy related problem. I just can't think of any other reason that this would happen (and I've never seen that error before).

side note: Flags need to be under ~5.5kb, and they can be bigger then 107x71 (dimensions-wise).

That's a caching problem. I take it you use Internet Explorer 5.5 or above?

5.0 actually ... I also a damn proxy server provided by the ISP which is unreliable at best.

Naleth may be right, if you (or your ISP) uses a proxy (esp. a caching proxy).

First idea: if you have a personal fire wall, try putting it on pass-thru or standby or whatever it calls it. Upload the flag then, and see (and report) what happens.

Secondly: I've been told that there's one popular program (Illustrator??) that does strange things to JPG, that sometimes causes problems. I'd suggest saving your flag in a different format (PNG or GIF would be best) and trying to upload it that way. See if that gives you the same problem or not.

You can even try BMP---it'll probably be too big, but you might get a different error message, which might help Salusa etc. figure what's wrong.

Hmm. I looked for "Internet Options" under the Tools menu, and couldn't find it; but this is the Macintosh version, so it's doubtless different. I found "Proxies" under "Preferences" under the Edit menu instead, and here's (http://shade.jonpearse.net/Proxies.jpg) a screenshot of what I got.

I'll try doing stuff with that; possibly it shall work.

I've got no firewall, so that shouldn't be the problem, and I'm pretty certain that it's not the file format; I've uploaded other flags made with the same program in the past.

By making IE bypass the proxy for Nationstates, I've managed to upload the flag. I love happy endings.

Glad I could help ;) (I find it kind of odd that there isn't any information filled in for the "Web Proxy" box, though. Maybe it's configured elsewhere :? ... not familiar with the Mac IE)
