*watch this topic* function...

17-12-2003, 19:48
I've been reading Quite a bit of the forums to familiarize myself with past topics, issues and histories of the game, but due to the sheer numbers this will take awhile to get through. I have used the *watch this topic* function but for the life of me have been unable to find the advantage to said function. Is there something I've overlooked such as an alert or a listing of my watched topics? If not I'd like to suggest the addition to the functionality or deletion of said function as it is therefore misleading, I have as yet found no way to keep track of topics of interest to me, save from manually searching for them upon each return.

I've found the best solution to this problem is to use the "tag" function on the Phoebian NS Portal to keep track of threads. The link is below.

It only works if you entered an email when you first created your nation. We're going to look into fixing that . .. . later.

Thank you both Guanyu and Salusa. Salusa, I found this out when I checked my e-mail later this evening  I appriciate the recognition to the need of change in this function and the intent to do so, in all due time.

How about a function that drops you a telegram when someone replies, instead of an email?

Oh yeah, in a vaugely connected topic, is it possible to get a feature added to send alerts when you recieve a TM (if you choose to "watch TMs" that is)?

I also use the Phoebian NS Portal for tagging threads, but actually... I don't find it the best thing for browsing the forums with, although it rocks for the rest of the game and for posting on like one thread as a puppet.

Except... sorta the other way round.

If both systems were put into place, you could get a TM to look for new replys then be alerted of the TM. Your right, there should be an option to watch your TMs or not, and when you get a TM, a little message pops up that says- "You've Got Mail!".

What do you think?

That sounds like a great idea to me, Basenji! :D Now talk "the powers that be" into it...heh.

I would love to get notified when we have t-grams. I don't always check in with all my puppets and sometimes don't read t-grams for days and days... an alert system would be wonderful.

When you consider the number of replies that topics get. . .

Why not just *tag*/*tags thread*/TAG it, or bookmark it?

Maybe, but what about the telegram notifaction idea?

And some people don't supply email addresses, so how can they mointer threads? Sometimes it's good to not have to keep going back to your ego search to look for new replys if your really getting into an RP.

If a little box poped up and said- "You have new replys on thread (Whatever)", it would be much easier to moniter threads. Don't you think?

Well, the thing about a telegram notification is that it would be hard to impliment. It would probably have to be some window that you leave open that automatically refreshes every minute or so ... but then you could just do that with the telegram page anyway (open it in a new windo and refresh it every now and then).

Now that sounds better, but as for tming, would you really want your TM box flushed out every 15 minutes or so?

Of course this is really up to Salusa. . . so we'll have to wait for a response from him.

Do we finally see eye-to-eye on this? :o Wow...this is rare. Usally we find an error in each others ideas!

So then we both like the idea of a little box poping up and notifying you when a topic is replyed to.

Good point Nal, it's easier just to leave the telegram window open and refrsh every once and a while. And Nal, a really off topic question here- Are you a guy or a girl?

Only if you subscribe to the topic.
Except for with a few of my puppets, I would find it easier to just tag it or ignore it.

Ok, you guys are going get a bad answer, and I'm sorry.

We consider these changes only after we have stabilized the server

This is a bad answer? Server stability is much better IMO thena watch topic function

*wonders what the good answer is, then*

Well, it's bad because it's basically a "We're not paying attention to this for a while, and we don't know when we will." as opposed to any definite answer.

OK all, bare with me a little bit if you would, this is the first time I've been moved to participate this much in message boards or RP games. First, what does tagging do. Secondly, I've noticed at the top of the browser it shows "You are logged in as****" or " You are not logged in" the notification of watched topics and of TM's could be linked to that function. If you are participating in a board you are never on the same browser page for very long solving the issue of refreshing.

Tagging is a really simple thing to do. On the Forum Index (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/index.php), you have a link on the upper right hand part of the screen that says "View my Posts". If you click on that, it will show you any topic you have made replies in. (This function is also called an "Ego Search")

Now if you reply in a topic, it will show up in your ego search. But if you have nothing to add, you <Tag> it, just so it shows up on your ego search and you have easy accesses to it.

Hope that makes sense.

Ack:
If you are looking at a thread then there is a little button in the top right that says "Tag." You click it and type a comment, it saves the thread number and the comment in the registry. If you want to go to a tagged page, there is a Forum menu option with "Tags" (list of all tags you've made) where you can click on a tag and it takes you to the thread. "Add to Tags" in the same forum menu acts the same as the "Tag" button (except it gets grayed out if you aren't looking at a thread, not disappears)
