Invision Board?

15-12-2003, 17:38
I don't know if this has been mentioneed before as I can't do a search for it. But why don't we change forums to Invision powerboard?

Pros: We won't get those 500 errors much anymore maybe not at all.

It is much easier to use and there are many modifications that would make NS a much better game.

There are many modifications to change the SQL files over to the new board so we don't lose any of the posts.

By invision I assume that you mean remote hosting with them? This would not work as the game an the boards need to communicate. However, I would also comment that [violet] is currently in negotiations that would result in better forum performance. Unfortunately, I cannot say more than this.

No. He means install Invision Power Systems bulletin board on the server.

It is free to download, but you don't receive any support or anything else really until you hand them a rather large chunk of cash.

No, you'd be much much better off staying with phpBB and jsut upgrading to 2.2 when it's released. I'm assuming the code which merges phpBB with NationStates is practically all in the Perl side, so I don't foresee much pain there.

Hmm, Ok. I think that we want to keep the same forum (to keep the code in sync).

Yeah, we probably should upgrade, but we're freezing major forum changes for a bit (yeah, I know, it's been a while) to see what happens with negotiations.

I'm quite sure that (almost) all is Perl Side, but I don't know what would go into upgrading this forum because of all of the modifications implemented to strip it down.

If you upgrade the forum hundreds of us will be wndering aimlessly for a day or two. ( )

When we upgrade to 2.2, will the changes involve any changes to how the forums will look? If so, you may want to make a thread before you upgrade to tell people not to freak out.

This will eliminate all the "Why does it look different" threads.

Well, so far the only real modifications I've seen/been told of are the template system speedyupperer MOD, the removal of searches and profiles, and a few ones which [violet] has posted on the phpBB support forums...

And I really can't stress how much you should upgrade to 2.0.6 as soon as possible... There are several major security updates included in it which aren't in 2.0.4... I can explain further if you wish, either through MSN or telegrams, former preferred.

Suffice to say, the template system in 2.2 is considerably faster, and the code is considerably easier to modify (at least I think so, it's better organised) so chopping large chunks like the search should be a lot faster, but it's not been released yet, heh.

If you want to see what it'll look like, visit phpBB 2.2 Development Forums (http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB22/).

I prefer it, heh, but that's just my personal opinion. :P

Looks a lot more professional, I think. I think we should keep the powers of mods how they are now, not how it is with other forums where "These mods get this forum, and these others get this forum...” I think all mods should be able to have powers in every forum, as it's more efficient.

So that way, if one mod is on, s/he can police all forums in case something goes wrong in a forum that s/he wouldn't normally have power over. And with the amount of troublemakers we get over NS...

All they've done is created one (hidden) group which has moderator access to all forums.

It's really quite simple to do, and a lot of forums I know do it. We do it at Writers Ramblings, but one of the administrators has a bad habit of just adding people to specific forums as opposed to adding them to the mods group, heh...

You clearly don't know people. You could have an anouncement on the top of every forum, the forum index, egosearch, and search pages, send out telegrams to all players, and put it in the news page, and we would still see those threads in the hundereds.
