Hmm. . . interesting. Does anybody know a url with all of the common names for colors in phpBB?
Here are some that I have discovered just now using "preview"

navy
pink
teal
yellowgreen

Wow some of those are hard to read ... especially that aquamarine.

You can post any html color, which means basically '#' followed by six hex digits (0-F) ... unless I don't undcerstand how it works (which is possible).

The format for html colors is #RRGGBB .. in other words, the first pair of numbers are the red value, the second pair are the green value and the third pair are the blue value (on the RGB scale).

There are also quite a few predefined HTML colors (a list of which I don't have) that I would bet are all the color names you can use. Here are a few more predefined colors I found while getting this info, though:

fuchsia
olive
silver
aqua

There are 256 "safe" web colors - because Macs, Windows, and *nix boxes don't all display colors at the same values. The safe colors are a list of colors which display at the same value across all platforms. We get the number 256 because of the way computers think of colors.

Most monitors creates colors by firing electrons at rows of blue, green, and red phosphorous dots. Stick your face reaaaaally close to your monitor and you can see them (don't let anyone else see you doing this, it's embarrasing). Since red-green-blue are the primary colors of light, you can make any color you like by combining them. Therefore, computers think of colors as combinations of red, green, and blue (the RGB color model).

Since you have three chromas (base colors), you need three sets of numbers to identify the precise shade of each chroma in color. These range from 0 (black, no presence of the color) to 255 (white, absolute intensity of the color). Colors are represented in hex code instead of binary. It's a little complicated, but suffice it to say that a range of 256 intensities exist for each color. If you do the math, that's just over 16 million potential chroma combinations. Really.

... sigh. I need less time on my hands.

Anyway, Hex code runs like:

0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A B C D E F

With A-F standing in for 10-15. Those are the characters (0-F) you want to enter in after the # when experimenting to find colors. You use six figures to define a color because each color has a range of 0-255, requiring two sets of characters (FF) to represent 255, and one set for each of the three colors. Whew.
