Donations

I said it once before on a thread, and I'm gonna make it official-
Why don't we open up a donation system on NS? If people want better servers, they can help fund! The system would have to accept Paypal, and credit cards. You would also get something special if you donated.
I know a few other forums that do it, so why not NS?
How about it? :D I know I'd donate, and I know a few others who would too.

Wouldn't this be as simple as just setting up a paypal account?

Yeah, pretty much.
I'd probably make a donation if such a fund was set up. The forums have been worse than ever recently.

I know that many people would like to donate money for the game (Max also knows this), but it doesn't seem to be happening soon. shrug
This is my recommendation. Buy his books. That's why he built this in the first place. Yeah, it might cost a tad more, but your also getting a very enjoyable read. I've read Jennifer Government and really liked it, and have heard good things about Syrup. Right now, this is the only way to get money to him.
Remember, various gift-giving holidays are coming up.

Yeah, I'm asking for it for Christmas. And Sal, could you talk to the people in high places about opening up a PayPal account to accpet donations? It's rather easy, I could help if it was needed. (Doubts it).
Oh well. :?
I've already got the book, and I'd be willing to donate a tenner or something towards NS.
Think about it... if just 5% of all the nations donated $1, that's nearly $5000
When Max comes to Portland, I'll hand him twenty bucks. I hope people will do as I do ;)

I'd donate $5- $10, depending on how much extra cash I had and how generous I was feeling.

Of course Max might actually make more if he set up a donation area, since it would all go to him. Is he unsure of how to do so, or nervous about it or what, just odd he doesn't set it up. It's secure, with few problems, good support, and easy to do. Odd Max hasn't done so.
I have said it before, and people have agreed (tho this would be more complicated) that a online shop would be great as well. Not just for the book, but for shirts, mouspads, etc.. Relatively inexpensive to produce, these items would be great for those who have already purchased the books.

I would buy stuff like that from a store. Just lots of site stuff. You'd make a fortune!
The shirts would have humor to them, such as-
[code:1:e3a2927f91]"I NEWK J00!11!!1"
"I travled to the far reaches of the NationStates universe, and all I got was this shirt."
"We must make a sacrifice to the server...with a young virgin!"
"Man ignore cannons!"[/code:1:e3a2927f91]
All with the site address beneath it.
I'd buy the nuke one, and some others. Maybe we could organize some sort of store front and donations page? I'm sure such a thing could easily be worked out. Anyone intrested in writing an email to Max about it?

Heck, if you all think an email will be more sucessfull then forum posts, will gladly write an e-mail. I always got the opinion that Max was aware of my ideas along these lines from the forums, just did not want to go that route.

This kind of stuff has been considered. Might even happen. ;)
With regard to donations, this was planned to happen a while back, but a few other hosting alternatives have been explored instead. Basically, we don't want to take money for donations if we can't be sure we'll use it to improve performance.
And, as SalusaSecondus said... you can always buy one of Max's books (http://www.maxbarry.com/). ;) The Jennifer Government paperback comes out in the US & Canada on Jan 6th!
I for one would donate just to help Max cover some of the costs of the server + bandwidth :D

I'd donate for sure.

What about the store front thing? Might be a good way for Mr. Barry to get some extra money, and gain some publicty, in addition to the fortune he must be making with his book (Which I'm getting for Christmas by the way 8) ).

I believe that is what this is refering to:

As a quick addition, even the option of (for a few extra dollars) having Max autograph a copy, would be a way to increase revenue. Some who already have the book, might buy another one if they could (again, for a few doallars extra) get a nice little sig and personalization.
I would love to open a book and see that It's a Trap.

Lots of people ask about this, but it requires books to be posted from wherever you live to Australia and back again -- via a trackable method of postage, in case they go missing -- and that's usually slow and very expensive.
There is, however, a Max Barry USA tour coming up in Feb 2004 -- hasn't been officially announced yet, but you can get a sneak peak here: http://www.maxbarry.com/jennifergovernment/usatour2004.html . So if you'd like a book signed, that's probably going to be your best chance for a while.

Too bad, looks like you won't be near me. Will keep looking to see if you make it to my sleepy little town. Likey as not, if you come to my state, it will be to the nearby capital.
Either way, looks great, good luck. I imagine you could meet some really weird people who happen to spend hours lurking around this site.
How about a mailing adress, for those of us without PayPal accounts?
