How does population rise? is it strictly by the amount of time you have existed? or soes it have to do with the conditions your people live in?

You:
-start at 5 million
-increase by 1 million a day until 10 million
-increase by 2 million a day until 20 million
-increase by 3 million a day until around 50 million (not sure exactly)
-increase by 3-4 million a day until 100 million
-increase by 5-7 million a day from then on
-if you get the pop bug your population increaes twices as fast as normal

Note that the 3-4 million and 5-7 million are random, hole number increases.

Hope that this helps somewhat.

a bigger and/or economicly stronger nation can of course build a bigger army or a more teclonlogicly advanced space fleet; but what does this do for any real (or virtual) living person, place or thing?

what about the malthusian reality that there is no such thing as a limitless resource?

are we then free, as with appearantly all 'game' generated stats, to ignore them or use them only as a general guideline if we should so choose?

The pop bug was a game error that caused some nations to increase in population at twice the rate than normally. It's how nations such as Josifovich got such large populations.

I think it's largely been eradicated now

Also, population is directly connected to your ossues that are debated,if you choose to have "None per day" then you will find that your population either increases slowly or stops growing alltogether.Whilst,I find that to have two per day, makes your chances of having 7mil increase per day greater.

You can sometimes get growth of 9 mil without the pop. bug.

This is incorrect. Population increase is not dependent on the number of issues you are set to receive
