Yet another clueless wonder

I am a bit confused about how I actually affect the "stats" of my country. Ignoring the RPing aspect of the game for a moment. I understand that the issues I vote on affect things such as my economy and civil liberties and how corrupt my nation is. But I would assume that I would have some type of advisors to tell me what the results of my decisions would be.

For example given three options (barring the law of unintended consequences... which are of course unintended:) ) how can I tell if they will tend to give a positive or negative push to whatever stat.

The FAQ mentions that how you view your country is not necessarily the same as how your country "really is." But it might be nice to be able to make choices to actively move your country in the direction you want to go. (Perhaps a newbie flag/mode where extra information is given for the issue responses.)

Aside from issue selctions am I overlooking any way of actively changing things such as income tax rate and main industry. (For example my country is currently in book publishing... maybe I would like to have my main industry be tourism or something.)

A clarifying thought about "advisors". The reason this is important is that each and every player out here has a "vision of the good life". My thoughts on what will happen by implimenting X issue might be different than the game's processes. I would be nice to get an idea of how the game's biases interact with a given player's biases.

Having limited control, and being uncertain of the exact outcome of choices, is part of the game. If we had all the information we'd essentially be setting whatever we want our nation's statistics to be. Where's the fun in that?

If you join the UN, your natiosn statics will also be changed by resolutions that pass. The change is based on whatever the type of resolution that gets passed is ("Protect the environment at hte expense of bussiness" "Restrict freedoms to increase moral decency" ect) not the actuall text of the resolution. Once agian, though, the exact effects of each category are classified material (albeit a bit easier to guess)
