Smiley Issues? (Cause found. Salusa, take a look)

I know this is probably pittily compared to other problems, but a couple days ago, the smileys on NS stopped "working" for me.

 doesn't laugh.
 doesn't eye roll.
 doesn't blush.
:tantrum: doesn't go insane.
EDIT:  doesn't cry.

Anyone else have this, or is it just me? I havn't had any other problems that I've noticed with animated objects.

I'm running IE 6.0 on Windows XP Home Edition. Thanks.

EDIT2: I just saw the newspaper-ish icons in the forums that indicate new posts or "hot" topics aren't working either.

Did you accidentally switched off animated images? Or images at all?

Try this (I had this problem like a month ago):
Tools>Internet Options>[Advanced] Tab>Multimedia>[ ]Play Animations on Web Pages
If that box isn't checked, then check it and they should start playing again. Maybe after a refresh of the page.

Nope. Everything else on other web pages works. I'm gonna check if it's my new firewall.

AND: Firewall test negative.

Tried it. Was checked.

Hmmm

When did this start? Can you think of anything you did around that time to maybe cause it? (Basic questions, but still ...)

I noticed it two days ago, and thought it may be server related, so I didn't say anything. I asked someone tonight on AIM if they were having the same issue, and they said no. I can think of 50 things I've done, such as installing a new firewall, getting new Ad-aware, etc., but nothing that would cause just the smileys on NS to stop working.

Maybe it's the start of my video card going kaput? :?

EDIT: Tis Fyre.

Do you see the images at all?
Or are they simply not animated anymore?
Does a program block images? (something like WebWasher)

Now I'm at school, and they're working fine.

*sighs* Pity my computer.

Well, it's probably some sort of setting that got changed somehow in IE. Maybe go over the "Advanced" tab with a fine toothed comb and look for anything that sounds like it might disable animations. You could always get a new web-browser though, I bet that'd solve it ;)

After combing through my "advanced" tab, and downloading the latest version of Netscape, I still have no working smileys on this site. Every other site still works.

Im am thoroughly stumped. Salusa, your genious please?

I have absolutely no idea.

Every other site still works.
Now THAT is odd. Hmm ... do you have a large Temp. Internet Files. cache? It's a long shot, but you could try clearing that out (I doubt this will work, but why not try? It could probably use a good cleaning anyway)

I did a LOT of checking and tweaking, and I found the answer. The problem is caused by, of all things, ZoneAlarm Pro.

Apparently it sees the smileys and post indicators as ads, and blocks them when you have animated ad blocking set to either 'medium' or 'high'. I have no idea why this would be the case. Salusa, any ideas on why ZA would regard them as ads and/or how to fix this besides turning off my popup block feature?

Not familiar with ZoneAlarm, but is there a way you can set nationstates.net as an "ok kinda site" or whatever and lower the setting only on this site? (there aren't many popups around here)

Aha! and I've just started playing with ZA Pro myself (I'm sticking with the free version).

Go to the privacy page, the "websites" tab, find "www.nationstates.net" and change it's settings to allow everything (especially animations . . .). I've been over this site, and we're safe to let everything through.

Done. Everything works now. :D

Thanks a bunch. A minor annoyance, but one I just had to figure out.

Any clue as to why ZA sees them as ads? :?

Most animated GIFs on the web are ads, and it blocks all animations at that level of security.
